Basic Facts

• MICHAEL Project began in June 2004
• MICHAELplus began in June 2006
• Continues to June 2008
• Funded by EC eTEN programme, basing on national
  funding
• 18 countries are now participating Belgium,
  Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland,
  France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Malta,
  the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovak
  Republic, Spain, Sweden and UK

Building blocks

• Builds on the MINERVA project and its work on
  inventories, multilingualism and interoperability
• Uses an open source technical platform developed
  by France (MCC) for the Catalogue des fonds
  culturels numérisés

Cross domain

• Museums, libraries, archives, audio-visual
  archives, heritage offices, universities and
  other institutions are contributing descriptions
  of their collections

• MICHAEL metadata schema has been mapped to IEEE
  LOM
• Broad concept of a Service/Product that makes a
  single Collection can be considered as a learning
  object
• Provides basic description keywords
• Curriculum/learning specific indexing is missing

Next steps

• We want to find a way of enriching MICHAEL
  records to support education needs!

UK trials

• Curriculum Online produced a tagging tool to
  help content providers in the UK to create
  educational metadata
• Integrates curriculum vocabularies from BECTA
• We want to import MICHAEL records to enable the
  metadata to be enriched

Work so far

• Adaptation of the tagging tool
• Users will be able to select MICHAEL records,
  import them and add education indexing and save
• Learning resource repository to be accessible via
  OAI-PMH to educational information services
• Feasibility study in progress for integration of
  MICHAEL records into commercial learning
  platforms
