The BIG Question and Daily Question
  • The BIG Question How do we classify vertebrates
    and invertebrates based on physical
    characteristics?
  • March 3 What are the different types of
vertebrate and how can we tell them apart?
  • Agenda Mystery of the African animal
Categorizing traits of vertebrates into a graphic
    organizer

2
Instructional Vocabulary
  • Agenda Mystery of the African animal
    Categorizing traits of vertebrates
  • Instructional Vocabulary
  • To categorize To put into groups
  • Trait an identifying characteristic

3
Ah.What is that?!
4
Your job is to figure out type of vertebrate this
African animal is. Note Your are NOT attempting
to discover the type of animal.
5
What do you need to know to answer this question?
  • What is a vertebrate?
  • What are the characteristics of each group of
    vertebrates?
  • What are some examples of different vertebrates?
  • What are the expectations for this activity?
  • To categorize To put into groups

6
Roles
  • 1- Material Collector
  • 2- Note Taker/Organizer of the Clues
  • 3- Returner of all Materials
  • 4- Reporter
  • Remember Everyone works every day!!

7
What type of Vertebrate is it??
8
Based on your notes from yesterday.
  • What type of vertebrate is this?

9
Daily Question and Agenda
  • The BIG Question How do we classify vertebrates
    and invertebrates based on physical
    characteristics?
  • March 4 What is an invertebrate?
  • Agenda Observing different types of
    invertebrates and outlining notes on
    invertebrates
  • Classify Put into groups
  • Outline way to show related items of text

10
Look and Observe
  • What is the shape of the body?
  • Does the body have any markings on it? Tell me
    about them.
  • Does the creature have a mouth? If so where?
  • How many limbs (arms and legs) does it have?
  • Where do you think this creature lives based on
    your observations?

12
I. Invertebrates
  • So Many!
  • 98 of all indentified species are invertebrates

13
II. Physical Characteristics
  • Hard Bodies
  • Exoskeletons
  • Hard outer coverings
  • Protection
  • Clams, mussels
  • Arthropods
  • Animal with hard outer shell and jointed body and
    limbs
  • Largest group of invertebrates
  • Insects, crustaceans (lobsters)

14
II. Physical Characteristics
  • Soft Bodies
  • Earthworms

15
III. Body Plan
  • Bilateral Symmetry
  • 1. Right and left halves of the body mirror each
    other.
  • 2. Animals that move and look for food

16
III. Body Plans
  • B. Circular body (Radial Symmetry)
  • Arranged around a central mouth- like spokes
    coming out from a wheel.
  • Stay in one place

17
IV. Simple to Complex
  • Some have developed organ systems while some,
like the placozoans, survive with few or no
    organs at all.
  • 1. Absorb what they need from their environment

18
V. Types of Invertebrates
  • Zoologists classify invertebrates into about 30
    major groups.
  • Phyla
  • Phylum Anthropoda- has the most species (about 1
    million)- insects
  • Phylum Mollusca (mollusks)
  • Phylum Porifera (sponges)

19
VI. Where they Live
  • A. Everywhere!!

What is evolution?
  • Evolution is the change in features of a species
    over time
  • It doesnt happen quickly, it takes millions of
