Topics
  • Introduction
  • Why IPv6?
  • Benefits of IPv6 for the people and country
  • Government Initiative
  • IPv6 Deployment in Malaysia
  • Conclusion

3
Introduction
  • Malaysia is now in par and slightly ahead in IPv6
research and deployment but there are lots of
areas that still need to be covered.
  • The government has established the National IPv6
Council to provide leadership and strategic
planning for IPv6 implementation in Malaysia.
Under the 9th Malaysian Plan (2006-2010), IPv6 is
one of the three technologies that the Ministry
of Energy, Water and Communication (MEWC) will
focus on, apart from sensor technologies and
    broadband.
  • The Council has stated that all ISPs in the
country are to be IPv6 enabled by end of 2006,
e-Government by 2008 and the whole country by
    2010.

4
Why IPv6? (Theoretical Reasons)
  • only compelling reason more IP addresses!
  • for billions of new users (Japan, China,
    Indonesia)
  • for billions of new devices (mobile phones, cars,
    appliances,)
  • for always-on access (cable, xDSL,
    ethernet-to-the-home,)
  • for applications that are difficult, expensive,
or impossible to operate through NATs (IP
    telephony, peer-to-peer gaming, home servers,)
  • to phase out NATs to improve the robustness,
security, performance, and manageability of the
    Internet

5
Why IPv6? (Business Reasons)
  • demand from particular regions
  • Asia, EU
  • technical, geo-political, and business reasons
  • demand is now
  • demand for particular services
  • cellular wireless (especially 3GPP2 standards)
  • Internet gaming (e.g., Sony Playstation 2)
  • use is gt 1.5 years away (but testbeds needed
    now)
  • potential move to IPv6 by Microsoft?
  • IPv6 included in Windows XP2,
  • Windows Vista is IPv6 enabale

6
Benefits of IPv6 for the people and country
  • Education Benefits
  • Improve the quality of the internet for students
    to look for information
  • E-learning would be made more efficient than ever
  • School Net project to be improved in performance
    with the aid of IPv6

7
Benefits of IPv6 for the people and country
  • Financial Benefits
  • PC Market Growth
  • Countrys Economic Growth with IPv6
  • Consumer Electronics
  • Entertainment
  • Communications
  • ISP advantages
  • E-Commerce growth
  • Growth in 3G mobile devices

8
Benefits of IPv6 for the people and country
  • Technical Benefits
  • End to End Security
  • QoS Quality of Service Function
  • Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS)
  • Better Support for mobility (MIPv6)
  • Stateless Auto configuration support
  • Does nor need ARP or NAT
  • Most Importantly more addresses for everyone
51028 addresses for each people in the world !!!

9
Other Benefits of IPv6
  • Server-less plug and play possible
  • End to end, IP layer authentication encryption
    possible
  • elimination of triangle routing for mobile IP
  • other minor improvements
  • quality of service (same QoS capabilities as
    IPv4)
  • flow label field in IPv6 header may enable more
efficient flow classification by routers, but
does not add any new capability
  • routing (same routing protocols as IPv4)
  • except larger address allows more levels of
    hierarchy
  • except customer multihoming is defeating hierarchy

10
Why Malaysia needs IPv6 ?
  • IPv6 offers Malaysia
  • A new area to increase it competitiveness in the
    regions ICT sector
  • To set itself at par with the advanced nations in
the Internet which currently has a dominant share
    of Internet address space
  • Paving the road to the use of the Next Generation
    Internet
  • Creating new markets for mobile and cellular
    application
  • The ability to be globally connected for every
    person

11
Government Initiative
  • IPv6 Council Establishment
  • MEWC has set-up the NATIONAL IPv6 COUNCIL and had
    first meeting in Dec. 2004
  • Objective to plan and implement IPv6 adoption
    in Malaysia
  • Targets to be IPv6 enabled
  • ISP by end of 2006
  • E-Government by end of2008
  • Malaysia by end of 2010
  • Members MEWC, EPU, MOF, MAMPU, MOSTI, MCMC, Main
    ISPs/IASPs (telcos Jaring)

12
Government Initiative
  • NAv6 Centre Establishment
  • Established in March 2005
  • Spearhead the nations RD in IPv6
  • Execute its functions in RD, Monitoring Audit,
    Awareness and Promotion, Human Resource
    Development
  • Detailing the IPv6 Vision and Roadmap for the
    nation

13
Government Initiative MyICMS 886 STRATEGY
Malaysias drive forward in the delivery of
advanced information, communications and
multimedia services from 2006 through 2010
