3Introduction
- Malaysia is now in par and slightly ahead in IPv6
research and deployment but there are lots of
areas that still need to be covered. - The government has established the National IPv6
Council to provide leadership and strategic
planning for IPv6 implementation in Malaysia.
Under the 9th Malaysian Plan (2006-2010), IPv6 is
one of the three technologies that the Ministry
of Energy, Water and Communication (MEWC) will
focus on, apart from sensor technologies and
broadband. - The Council has stated that all ISPs in the
country are to be IPv6 enabled by end of 2006,
e-Government by 2008 and the whole country by
2010.
4Why IPv6? (Theoretical Reasons)
- only compelling reason more IP addresses!
- for billions of new users (Japan, China,
Indonesia) - for billions of new devices (mobile phones, cars,
appliances,) - for always-on access (cable, xDSL,
ethernet-to-the-home,) - for applications that are difficult, expensive,
or impossible to operate through NATs (IP
telephony, peer-to-peer gaming, home servers,) - to phase out NATs to improve the robustness,
security, performance, and manageability of the
Internet
5Why IPv6? (Business Reasons)
- demand from particular regions
- Asia, EU
- technical, geo-political, and business reasons
- demand is now
- demand for particular services
- cellular wireless (especially 3GPP2 standards)
- Internet gaming (e.g., Sony Playstation 2)
- use is gt 1.5 years away (but testbeds needed
now) - potential move to IPv6 by Microsoft?
- IPv6 included in Windows XP2,
- Windows Vista is IPv6 enabale
6Benefits of IPv6 for the people and country
- Education Benefits
- Improve the quality of the internet for students
to look for information - E-learning would be made more efficient than ever
- School Net project to be improved in performance
with the aid of IPv6
7Benefits of IPv6 for the people and country
- Financial Benefits
- PC Market Growth
- Countrys Economic Growth with IPv6
- Consumer Electronics
- Entertainment
- Communications
- ISP advantages
- E-Commerce growth
- Growth in 3G mobile devices
8Benefits of IPv6 for the people and country
- Technical Benefits
- End to End Security
- QoS Quality of Service Function
- Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS)
- Better Support for mobility (MIPv6)
- Stateless Auto configuration support
- Does nor need ARP or NAT
- Most Importantly more addresses for everyone
51028 addresses for each people in the world !!!
9Other Benefits of IPv6
- Server-less plug and play possible
- End to end, IP layer authentication encryption
possible - elimination of triangle routing for mobile IP
- other minor improvements
- quality of service (same QoS capabilities as
IPv4) - flow label field in IPv6 header may enable more
efficient flow classification by routers, but
does not add any new capability - routing (same routing protocols as IPv4)
- except larger address allows more levels of
hierarchy - except customer multihoming is defeating hierarchy
10Why Malaysia needs IPv6 ?
- IPv6 offers Malaysia
- A new area to increase it competitiveness in the
regions ICT sector - To set itself at par with the advanced nations in
the Internet which currently has a dominant share
of Internet address space - Paving the road to the use of the Next Generation
Internet - Creating new markets for mobile and cellular
application - The ability to be globally connected for every
person
11Government Initiative
- IPv6 Council Establishment
- MEWC has set-up the NATIONAL IPv6 COUNCIL and had
first meeting in Dec. 2004 - Objective to plan and implement IPv6 adoption
in Malaysia - Targets to be IPv6 enabled
- ISP by end of 2006
- E-Government by end of2008
- Malaysia by end of 2010
- Members MEWC, EPU, MOF, MAMPU, MOSTI, MCMC, Main
ISPs/IASPs (telcos Jaring)
12Government Initiative
- NAv6 Centre Establishment
- Established in March 2005
- Spearhead the nations RD in IPv6
- Execute its functions in RD, Monitoring Audit,
Awareness and Promotion, Human Resource
Development - Detailing the IPv6 Vision and Roadmap for the
nation
13Government Initiative MyICMS 886 STRATEGY
Malaysias drive forward in the delivery of
advanced information, communications and
multimedia services from 2006 through 2010
14Government Initiative MyICMS 886
- IPv6 is expected to be an integrator for all the
other service and infrastructure development - It will help boost internet growth for broadband
services and 3G communication networks - Supports the other infrastructure in terms of
providing better internet security and quality of
service - Improved end to end connectivity will boost the
market of online entertainment and gaming - It will be known as one of the fundamental steps
to take our Internet into the Next Generation
Internet
15Government Initiative
- Malaysia Technical Standard Forum Berhad (MTSFB)
- Main Objectives
- to actively promote a co-operative environment to
address in a timely manner national or
international issues involving technical
standards, technical codes and development of
operational guidelines for Malaysian
Communications and Multimedia Industry - establish and maintain technical standards,
technical codes, network interoperability and
operational issues affecting the Malaysian
Communications and Multimedia Industry. - develop, recommend, modify, update and seek the
registration of technical codes from time to time
for the Communications and Multimedia Industry - monitor technical code compliance and administer
sanctions for breaches of the technical codes - To develop a set of action task to promote and
create awareness on IPv6 applications.

joint IPv6 network interconnectivity for the
purposes of conducting a trial and exploring the
next generation IP services in Malaysia. - Members

21MEWC INITIATIVES- Pilot Project
- Objectives
- To provide a detail guideline for a proper IPv4
to IPv6 transition of Government Agencies
networks - To implement IPv4 to IPv6 transition in MEWC and
MAMPU as a pilot project - Duration September 2007 May 2008
22MEWC INITIATIVES- Pilot Project
23MEWC INITIATIVES- Roadmap
- Objectives
- To develop a national framework document for the
IPv6 roadmap for Malaysia that will be referred
to by all government agencies, industries and
research institutions in the country. It will
also promote and ensure a scheduled adoption of
IPv6 in Malaysia. - Duration January August 2007
24MEWC INITIATIVES- Awareness
- Series of seminar, workshop, road-show, and
training - Objectives
- To provide extensive awareness in Malaysia as
well as in international level. By providing
awareness to important commercial segments we
expect an active community can be formed as a
platform for sharing the knowledge and expertise - Duration January 2007 Dec. 2009
25Conclusion
- The transition towards IPv6 is inevitable and the
whole country should start preparing toward the
transition plan. - To ensure a scheduled adoption of IPv6 in
Malaysia, involvement of all stakeholders
including government agencies, industries and
research institutions is required.
