Project ERNET

• Project of DoE with UNDP support
• Started in 1986 with development objective of
• enhancing national capability through
• Progressively setting up a nation wide network
• RD, Education and Training
• Implemented with participation of 5 IITs, NCST,
  IISc DoE
• Emphasis on open architecture in terms of
  protocols, standardization, expandability
  services
• Concentrated on RD till 1990
• Focus shifted to network operations in 1991

ERNET Infrastructure

• Terrestrial Backbone
• IPv4 and IPv6 enabled dual stack backbone
• International Connectivity through Reliance,
  Bharti and VSNL
• International Connectivity from Multiple POPs for
  redundancy
• Satellite Network
• Broadband FTDMA for shared bandwidth
• SCPC for dedicated bandwidth
• 13 POPs located at ER Institutions
• Variety of Connectivity Options
• Dial-up, Lesaed Lines, Radio, VSATs

ERNET GEANT Connectivity

• A 34 Mbps connectivity is planned between ERNET
  and GEANT.
• It is a programme funded by European Union
  through DANTE and Govt. of India through ERNET,
  TIFR DST.
• 10 research institutes/universities will use the
  link for collaborative research in High Energy
  Physics.
• We would run IPv6 on this link.

ERNET GEANT Connectivity

• Telecom Italia has been selected as service
  provider for 34 Mbps connectivity based on their
  bid.
• The link will terminate at Milan POP of DANTE and
  Mumbai POP of ERNET.

GARUDA

• Department of Information Technology (DIT), Govt.
  of India, has funded CDAC to deploy computational
  grid named GARUDA as Proof of Concept project.
• It will connect 45 institutes in 17 cities in the
  country at 10/100 Mbps bandwidth.

GARUDA

• DIT while approving the project, has directed
  ERNET based on its previous experience, to set-up
  Communication Fabric for the project GARUDA.
• CDAC will work on deployment of application over
  the fabric.

Design Consideration

• It was decided to go for a managed network from a
  service provider instead of setting up of own
  network.

Features of Fabric

• It will be a Layer 3 MPLS VPN connecting 45
  institutes in 17 cities.
• 2.4 Gbps bandwidth will be dedicated on SPs
  backbone
• The last mile connectivity will be Fast
  Ethernet/Ethernet delivery over fiber to each
  institutes.
• The last mile from Service Provider(SP)s POP to
  each node will be on a ring.

• Stringent Service Level Agreement(SLA)
• 99.5 uptime
• 80 millisec latency
• Less than 1 packet loss on each link
• Network Management on 24x7x365 basis

Present Status

• ERNET had issued Purchase Order to M/s Sify Ltd.
  to set up the network.
• Deployment of Network is going on full swing.
• It is expected that Network will be ready by Mid
  of March 2006.
