Helping students become relevant
  • Mr. Beaudoin,
  • I cant thank you enough for the countless
  • opportunities and support you gave me this past
  • year. Between tutoring in the writing lab and
  • speaking at the School Board meetings, I truly
  • feel that I have left a lasting impression on
    KHS.
  • I could not have done that without you.
  • Kennebunk High School is extremely fortunate
  • to have you. Thank you again and I will keep in
  • touch.
  • Fondly,
  • Eileen

Helping students become relevant
IT IS ABOUT GIVING STUDENTS OPPORTUNITIES TO
MAKE DECISIONS THAT AFFECT THEM! IT IS
ABOUT ADULTS BELIEVING IN THEIR ABILITIES! IT IS
ABOUT GETTING THEM TO CARE!
9
Helping students become relevant
Schools should see students as ..
volunteers not prisoners. part of the
decision making process. citizens in a
democratic community. capable of making real
contributions. possibilities not problems.
10
The MAGIC is in them
  • The role of educators should be to help
  • students become
  • SOMEBODY
  • To help students become
  • VISIBLE
  • To help students
  • TO BE

11
Most people go into
education to help kids develop, become
somebody, and yet there is something in us
that wants to keep kids incapable
because it increases our
importance Ed. Week

Making School About Them
?
Student-Centered Classrooms
Student-Voice Service Learning Student-Led
Programs
13
WHAT IS STUDENT VOICE?
  • Creating a culture where

Students are empowered to take
responsibility for what happens to them
academically and socially. Students learn to
advocate for themselves and what they
need. Students are given opportunities to
practice civic skills. Students are encouraged
to speak out about matters of importance to
them.
14
TOP 10 WHY STUDENT VOICE
  • 10. Schools should be about students.
  • 9. Their participation should be
    non-negotiable!
  • 8. Their involvement leads to more success.
  • 7. Involvement in decisions creates ownership.
  • 6. Students feel like volunteers not
    prisoners.
  • 5. Teenagers should not be hidden away until
  • they become adults.
  • 4. Students may have some of the answers.
  • 3. Caring creates good citizenship.
  • 2. It shows that adults believe in their
    abilities.
  • 1. A silent school, is not a school at all.

CHALLENGE NIGHT

24
  • People only support
  • what they help
  • to create.

25
WIZARD
Helping students become relevant
  • The kids walk in, stroll in,
  • bounce in, flounce in, strut in, dance in,
  • and finally stagger into my classroom.
  • There are even a few who look and act
  • like they have been swept up by a tornado
  • and dropped in the back row.
  • Each in his or her own way is following
  • the yellow brick road to my door in search
  • of the Emerald City and the Wizard of Oz.
  • Some need courage and I support and
  • believe in them until they believe in
  • themselves.

26
WIZARD
Helping students become relevant
  • Some want a heart and I introduce them to
  • art, music, theater, and poetry
  • and let them explore their feelings.
  • Some are in search of a brain and
  • I help them locate theirs and show them
  • how to use it to the best of their ability.
  • Some are trying to find a home and
  • I give them a safe, secure place
  • to be with an adult who listens and cares.
  • I am not really a wizard so I use my
  • teaching skills to help my students learn
  • that the magic is within them, not me.

CARING RELATIONSHIPS
Keep EACH students candle burning.
Oh, I dont think you are college material.
It doesnt matter why the paper is late, you
have a zero!
You really struggled with my Algebra class,
I do not think you should be signing up
for Honors Geometry.
I know in other classes your teachers
provide you with class notes that is not
going to happen here.
This written assignment is too difficult for
you, just read on your own.

CARING RELATIONSHIPS
Believe that you have it and you have it!
Latin Proverb
Probably everyone in this room has
accomplished something they did not feel they
could because someone believed in them!
33
Dear Mrs. Massey, I am not sure if you
remember me, but I was a student of yours at
Hodjkins Jr. High back in 1960. I sat in the back
row and was pretty invisible, as I found school
work difficult. You, however, always believed
that I could do more than I thought I could, and
you were right! To the surprise of many, I have
become an educator, and am currently a high
school principal. Everyday I set out to make a
difference for my students by modeling that
spirit of hope you always exhibited towards me.
Please know that you have made a great
contribution to my development and, through my
work, your gift continues to touch the students
that I teach. Thank you so much!
Sincerely, Nelson Beaudoin

TEACHING AND LEARNING
Teaching Pedagogy How do we inspire students to
care about learning? Are we part of a
collaborative culture? Are we truly reflective
about teaching and learning?

Or is great teaching isolated and secretive?
39
TEACHING AND LEARNING
Standards / Expectations What should students
know and be able to do? Are our students ready
for post secondary work? Do all students have
access to challenging curriculum?

OR IS PRETTY GOOD .. GOOD ENOUGH?

The Change Activity
  • Change is uncomfortable!
  • Change is hard to see!
  • A few changes are okay, but a lot of change is
    very difficult!
  • It helps to see others around you changing!
  • After you change there is a temptation to
    change back!
  • People need to know why they have to change!
  • Change for the sake of change is not good!
  • Change is harder for some people than others!
  • Change is easier with clear explanations!
  • Change can be fun!

conversation in class revealed some astounding
details about high school life across the
country.. When I outlined my high school
career, that of independent learning, flexible
scheduling, and a school for each kid, my
classmates and professor were stunned. They could
not believe how much freedom I had in planning
and executing my high school education. The fact
that I had taken independent studies, done an
internship, and had experience with online
classes was something that my classmates had
never heard of before. After hearing tales of
other high schools around the country, I consider
myself very lucky to have attended Kennebunk High
School. I knew that we had a great school, but I
never how great I had it until I talked to others
about their experiences. I want to thank,
applaud, and congratulate you and the faculty and
staff for truly making Kennebunk High School a
"school for each kid." My classes and
experiences at KHS have absolutely prepared me
for college life and classes.
