Some facts and figures about EMBnet
Training and Education EMBnet offers a panel of
experts available to give specialized courses at
its nodes. National nodes provide local training
and support programmes in local languages.
Software development Staff from several EMBnet
nodes collaborate in developing new biocomputing
tools. Computing resources EMBnet nodes provide
their national scientific community with access
to high performance computing resources,
specialized databanks and up-to-date software.
Some nodes act as redistribution centres to
national research institutes. Technical support
Collaborative technical expertise within EMBnet
provides support for sustaining the biocomputing
facilities of the member nodes. Help desk Each
national node provides help to end users in their
local language about all aspects of biocomputing.
Publications EMBnet produces information and
guidance in biocomputing by publishing support
material for the end users. The quarterly
newsletter EMBnet.news" presents the latest
achievements inside the organization, together
with papers on new developments regarding
biocomputing in general.
EMBnet has 41 nodes spread over 30 countries
supporting thousands of registered users from all
over the world as well as a larger number of
Internet users. Â EMBnet nodes employ over 130
professionals. Computing resources add up to
around 230 hosts ranging from workstation-level
computers to supercomputers, and terabytes of
storage capacity. EMBnet users can easily get
access to over 120 primary biological and
bibliographic databases. EMBnet publishes one
international journal, Embnet.news, which is
complemented by 15 national newsletters. EMBnet
is committed to bring the latest software
algorithms to the user, free of charge and
continues to develop state of the art public
software (e.g. EMBOSS/Jemboss). Ten EMBnet nodes
are currently involved in the multimedia
educational resource project EMBER.
EMBnet (European Molecular Biology network) an
organization, founded in 1988, is a science-based
group of collaborating nodes throughout Europe
-and a number of nodes outside Europe. The
combined expertise of the nodes allows EMBnet to
provide services to the European molecular
biology community which encompass more than can
be provided by a single node.
