Title: SBC Standards

1
SBC Standards
  • http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-board_computer
    (see pictures)
  • Backplane SBCs are the most common type in use.
They employ various architectures, such as
CompactPCI, PXI, VMEbus, VXI, and PICMG.
Different from a conventional motherboard the I/O
interfacing technology (ISA, PCI, PCIX, etc) is
associated with the backplane slots, usually 20
or less. Such a configuration allows for
installation in a 19" rack mount enclosure.
  • Some SBCs are stackable, such as PC/104,
PC/104-Plus, PCI-104, EPIC, and EBX. Stackable
systems interface to supporting modules (e.g.
solid-state hard drive) via headers and employ
    SIMM and DIMM memory technology.

PC/104 Standard
  • http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PC/104 (see
    pictures)
  • Form factor 3.55 3.775 inches (90.17
95.89 mm). The height of the SBC is determined by
    the connector size.
  • The typical PC/04 stack includes a motherboard,
ADC, and GPIO. Newer peripheral technologies are
being deplyed 802.11 controllers, USB, and GPS
    receivers.

Form Factors Stacks
  • PC/104
  • so called because of its 104-pin header, which
includes all of the ISA lines and additional
ground pins. With the exception of current
requirements all other aspects match ISA.
  • PC/104-Plus
  • Same as the PC/104 with the addition of the PCI
bus. Due to on-baoard ISA and PCI connectors
    board real-estate is a concern.
  • PCI-104
  • Only nicludes the PCI connector and interface
    technology
  • EBX
  • EBX (Embedded Board eXpandable) supports ISA,
    PCI, and PCMCIA with a form-factor of 5.75 x
    8.00
  • EPIC
  • An SBC basedon the PC/104 with a form-factor of
    4.53x6.50
  • A stack is comprised of modules, such as
    PC/104, PC/104-Plus, or PCI-104 in various
    combinations.
  • The stack must contain at least one motherboard,
which acts as the main controller for various
    peripherals.
