Creating Templates
  • Trace shape and transfer to template plastic or
    cardboard

Cleaning Quilts

  • Soak in bathtub with quilters soap
  • SQEEZE water out
  • Rinse,
  • (DO NOT WRING)
  • Do NOT hang on clothes line
  • This will break the threads
  • Spread Quilt out on cotton sheet to dry

  • Put in a hallway or area away from windows
  • Not a brightly lit area
  • Cover windows with UV-filtering shield
  • Create a a small sleeve across the top of the
    quilt to hold a dowel
  • Stitches should not be visible on the front of
    the quilt

  • Acid-free environment
  • Avoid wood products
  • Use acid-free storage products

Folding
  • If folding pad each fold with crumpled,
    acid-free tissue paper, cotton batting or
    rolled-up 100 cotton white towels or sheets
  • Wrap whole quilt in tissue and place inside a
    cotton pillowcase
  • Refold the quilt three times a year

Cleaning
  • If quilts are musty air it out with fans
    blowing as it is spread on a bed
  • Gently vacuum the quilts surface to remove dust
    and dirt

  • Freshen up by gently vacuuming on a low setting
  • Before dry-cleaning talk to a local museum for
    name of professional quilt cleaner
  • Practice preventative maintenance keep it from
    getting dirty
