Title: The Peloponnesian War

1
The Peloponnesian War
Coached practice
Grade 6 students
What are you thinking about?
2
Mrs. Spately--Box 1 Boy, Athens was bossy--kind
of like a bullying parent. Alliance must be where
allies come from. Athens leaders not so
peaceful--more controlling about trade. Was this
why they were so powerful?
3
Rebecca--Box 1 How did they form an alliance?
Why did the cities invest money? How did Athens
change the league into an empire? Will there be a
revolt? U.N.!
4
Larry--Box 1 How it must have been for the
children during the wars. How what they were
doing is wrong, and in some way they will be
punished for this. How it would have been to live
in those times.
5
Natalie--Box 1 I felt bad for the other city
states. If they hadnt done all they there
wouldnt have been a war. Star wars.. Fighting...
6
Greg--Box 1 Trouble brewing. Jealousy. Athens
moving up. Sparta mad. Athens rich and
controlling. Athens blossoming.
7
Mrs. Spately--Box 2 I wonder if Athens was
surprised by what the Spartans were doing?
8
Rebecca--Box 2 Did Athens overlook the fact that
they had too many people in their city? It seems
like Pericles led Athens, a wonderful place with
kind people, into being mean, brutal. Why? Abuse
of power?
9
Larry--Box 2 They had a good idea, but what goes
around comes around.
10
Natalie--Box 2 Why did he crowd people into the
city? How did the plague start? How fast were
people dying?
11
Greg--Box 2 Athens walls protected
cities--smart. Not going too well in Athens.
Athens should just give up, they lost their
leader and everyone is dying--everything is not
turning out so good.
12
Mrs. Spately--Box 3 Persia seemed devious to sit
back and watch Athens and Sparta destroy each
other. Did it want final power or was she
remembering war or earlier years when whipped. It
must have been awful to starve.
13
Rebecca--Box 3 The Persians were sneaky. 100
years war. Its as if they wanted wars. Is that
why its called the Persian war?
14
Larry--Box 3 Athens helpless. Persia smart.
Sparta winning and Athens making mistakes. Athens
fights it out to the bitter end. Reminds me of
the movie Glory.
15
Natalie--Box 3 Reminds me of a normal war
because usually wars go on for a long time before
somebody wins. Reminds me of my tests because I
sometimes make stupid mistakes and Athens made a
stupid mistake.
16
Greg--Box 3 Why did Persia give Greece funds.
Reminds me of Command and Conquer -- a video
game.
17
Mrs. Spately--Box 4 The Athenians must have
really felt silly, stupid when tricked into
leaving ships. If I knew I was going to be
captured I would really be afraid.
18
Rebecca--Box 4 People should realize no one can
win in a war.
19
Larry--Box 4 I see the Spartan fleet quietly
capturing Athenian ships fleet without fighting.
Athens refusing surrender. I see Athenians
keeping barricading themselves inside city walls.
20
Natalie--Box 4 Athenians forced to surrender.
Didnt have a choice. Couldnt stop it. Like a
movie I once saw about a family that was forced
to give up because they were defeated.
21
Greg--Box 4 Spartans clever, well trained.
Athens not careful enough, finished themselves
off. Would they have melted gold/silver if
Pericles still alive?
22
Mrs. Spately--Box 5 I wonder why the younger
people refused to participate in the government.
Im thinking adults are always wary of new
ideas--youth always embraces it!
23
Rebecca--Box 5 Spartans destroyed Athens to
tyranny then back to democracy. Didnt like
it--too strict--like Mrs. Spatelys and school.
Tradgedy/Socrates--is there a play about him?
24
Larry--Box 5 The Athenians are not very happy
people. I think they are picky.
25
Natalie--Box 5 Im thinking about democracy and
how it changes peoples lives.
26
Greg--Box 5 I thought about how things were
different though they had democracy again.
27
Mrs. Spately--Box 6 How sad to watch a friend
drink hemlock! I dont think I could stand by and
watch someone commit suicide.
28
Rebecca--Box 6 Justice? Wisdom? Goodness? Athens
upset with Socrates. Death--hemlock!
29
Larry--Box 6 Why did he not escape?
30
Natalie--Box 6 Socrates is a noble man, and
Plato honored him very much. I think Socrates did
the right thing.
31
Greg--Box 6 I like his way of teaching--I think.
Why was S arrested? He could of escaped, but I
think he would be in more trouble. You cant
teach because people would notice.

Comments about the process!
Mrs. Spately I shared with the students my
thoughts as they discussed theirs. We discussed
questions to see if they had gotten it. Well,
they sure had and were pretty pleased with
themselves. Next year I will be doing this on a
regular basis.
33
Discussion questions after reading the
chapter The Peloponnesian War 1. Who was
involved? 2. What caused the war? 3. Who won? 4.
Final resolutions? 5. Lasting results?

Comments about the process!
Reflection
Rebecca I think this is a good thing to do. When
the class read theirs, I didnt understand
them--but then I looked at mine and it made
perfect sense. It shows that people think
different things.
35
Comments about the process!
Reflection
Larry I think the think/read process is good but
that it may not work for everybody. For some
people it is better to read, then let the reading
digest and then think extensively about it. One
of the schools problems is that they over
generalize.
36
Comments about the process!
Reflection
Natalie This is great. You can take the most
boring book and make yourself pay attention and
make it interesting. It also helps you remember
what you read.

Comments about the process!
Greg This was a good idea. I really was able to
get interested and not fall asleep. I learned a
lot. I will do this in the future.
