UKLight Projects
  • ESLEA (Exploitation of Switched Lightpaths for
    eScience Applications) is a project backed by the
    Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) and
    funded via HEFCE. It will enable, through the
    UKLight project, the UK research community to
    participate to the global initiative of an
    international experimental testbed to pilot new
    paradigms in optical networking.The two main
    tasks of this project follow.
  • Exploitation by e-Science applications - the
    application areas chosen are listed below
  • High Energy Physics (HEP) Particle Physics (PP)
    Data transfer - experiments involved are ECDF,
    D0, BaBar, ATLAS, CMS, LHCb, ALICE
  • VLBI Radio Astronomy Very Long Baseline
    Interferometry (VLBI) Data transfer
  • HPC Computational steering and Visualisation
    using High Performance Computing facilities
    within the RealityGrid project
  • MASTS (Measurement at All Scales in Time and
    Space) is an experimental eScience project
    focusing on the measurement and analysis of the
    evolution of very high capacity network services.
  • 46 PaQ IPv4 IPv6 Performance and QoS) observes
    and analyses the behaviour of QoS mechanisms and
    services, congestion control mechanisms, and new
    transport protocols when working together. Also,
    the way in which applications make use of the new
    services and the differences in behaviour in the
    use of these mechanisms from IPv4 and IPv6 are
    studied.

SuperJANET 5 Backbone
  • Integrate IP service and Uklight onto single CEF
    network
  • Dedicated fibres and optical equipment
  • Initially 10Gbps

  • Expecting to contract out operation of optical
    layer down to third party (telco)
  • Close co-operation expect to self-operate

  • Each of 19 regional networks will have
    distributed dual access to SJ5 core
  • Some new fibre digs required
  • UKERNA will not own fibre
  • Most leased dark fibre, some problem areas leased
    lambdas (or even leased circuits ?)) in order
    of difficulty
  • N Ireland (not much fibre under the Irish Sea)
  • N Scotland (limited fibre deployment)
  • SE England (surprising however, very rural so
    little fibre deployment)

    self-provided lambdas on SJ5
  • Each regional network will have access (currently
    Uklight coverage is limited)
  • Keep Uklight SDH kit
  • PtP lambdas over SJ5 available if project can
    provide funding
  • Possibility of UCLP experimentation in separate
    ITU band
  • Expect to replace UK-NL Uklight link with
    connection to GN2
