The Taste of Clean Water
  • Theme for the day
  • Ambition and Aspiration

8
African Ambition by Ian R Thorpe
  • Hunger has taken his family,
  • War has taken his legs and eyes,
  • All he wants is to know once more
  • The taste of clean water before he dies

9
How might he respond to his ambition?
  • Try to dig a well on his own for himself
  • Wait for a charity to come along and provide him
    with a supply of water
  • Get together with his neighbours to pool the few
resources they have to purchase a pump and dig a
well for all of the village to use
  • Try to steal the limited supply of fresh water
available in the village for himself

10
What about us?
  • You said
  • How we sometimes behave

11
In reality where are we now?
  • Working effectively together to achieve our goals
  • Some cliques are competing with or against
    others for their own benefit
  • Some people are seeking individual glory at the
    expense of others
  • A mixture of the above

12
Activity
  • At your table you have ten minutes to discuss
three key changes to help us towards effective
    team working
  • Write these on three Post-IT notes
  • Feedback from some groups
  • Put Post-Its up on the flip chart

13
Im not happy.
  • Fred asks Anne, Mike and Sam to carry out some
tasks in line with an agreed procedure. Anne and
Sam feel that this is too much for them to cope
with at present. How should they respond?
  • Anne and Sam wind up Mike and then all three go
to their line manager to complain it isnt fair
and nobody understands how hard they have to work
  • Anne and Sam wind up Mike and then all three go
and tell Fred in no uncertain terms what they
think of him and how he really should be more
considerate of them and their feelings
  • Anne and Sam each go and individually and talk
calmly to Fred to ask if there is any way of
helping them to manage their workload either by
getting someone else to do some or all of the
work or alternatively by negotiating a manageable
    deadline
  • Anne and Sam do nothing but fester with
    resentment

14
How does Fred Feel?
  • If Anne and Sam respond by winding up Mike and
then going to their line manager to complain
about Fred how is Fred likely to feel?
  • Valued and important
  • Resentful that Anne, Sam and Mike didnt see fit
to come and speak to him about it before they
went off to see their line manager and make him
feel as though he has done something wrong when
he was only doing what had been agreed
  • Smug because he is in the right - he is following
his job role to the letter
  • Nothing he is unlikely to care one way or the
    other

15
Sams been rude to me..
  • Sally has been to see her line manager, Sam to
ask a question Sam was busy and waved Sally
away with a hand saying she was too busy to speak
at the moment. How should Sally respond?
  • Do nothing it is fine Sam behaves this way if
    she is busy
  • Sally reports Sam to her line manager
  • Sally spends the rest of the day whingeing to
colleagues that Sam just doesnt want to know and
simply doesnt care about any of the team in
fact she simply doesnt care about helping them
    to do their job effectively
  • Sally tells Sam that she finds Sams behaviour
unhelpful and aggressive and would appreciate it
if she didnt treat her in that way she would
be happy to come back later at an agreed time if
that would be helpful to Sam

16
I need help
  • Peter asks for help from his colleague Anne.
Although Anne appeared to agree to do something
at the time nothing appears to have happened as a
result or at least not what Peter had expected.
    How should Peter respond?
  • Get excited and whinge to his colleagues that
Anne is useless and doesnt do what she says she
    will
  • Do nothing
  • Throw his toys out of the pram and stop doing
    work on the task himself
  • Go and speak to Anne to see if there is a
problem, if there has been a misunderstanding or
whether she needs some help to do the activity
