5POOLING
In order to minimise the possibility of large and
unexpected calls the Clubs have developed a
simple system of reinsurance whereby a large
claim against the Club is borne not only by the
membership of that particular Club but also by
the membership of all the other Clubs in the
Pool. The first Club Pooling Agreement was drawn
up in 1899 between six British P I Clubs Since
then the Pool has grown and currently each member
Club retains the first US6 million of each
claim. Claims between US6 million and US50
million are covered by the International Group
which operates as though it was a huge mutual
Club. In this way the risk is spread throughout
the worlds entire merchant tonnage
6INTERNATIONAL GROUP REINSURANCE
Since the early 1950s the International Group has
purchased market reinsurance to cover unusually
high claims. This reinsurance contract is the
biggest marine reinsurance placing in the world
and the Groups bulk buying power has ensured
that the premiums charged have been far more
advantageous than that which could have been
obtained by an individual shipowner or individual
Club
7THE GROUP AS A LOBBYING BODY
The International Group provides a voice for its
members on issues of general concern such as new
International Conventions, national laws and
other insurance requirements. The International
Group has observer status at the International
Maritime Organisation and often makes formal
representations on behalf of its huge membership.
The International Group is also represented on
numerous drafting Committees of other
international organisations which deal with
matters relating to international shipping
8Various sub-Committees formed from the members of
Group Clubs monitor developments in international
and national legislation on such subjects as
pollution and environmental matters, contracts of
carriage, maritime security and vessel safety
standards. The sub-Committees share information
amongst themselves and, where appropriate, making
representations to the bodies responsible for
regulating these matters
9THE GROUPS ROLE IN DISSEMINATING INFORMATION
The International Group acts as a conduit to
disseminate information of general interest to
shipowners within the Group. In this respect it
is a powerful tool in improving standards of
shipping, safety awareness and measures taken for
the protection of the environment This
information is disseminated to individual members
who benefit from up to date expert advice on all
aspects of ship operations
