AFWA Shared Processing Site Update

Committee
Captain Robert Wacker HQ AFWA/XORS 29 Nov 01
2
Overview
  • DMSP Constellation Status and F16 Latest
    Developments
  • AFWA SPP Product Transition Status
  • Other current activities
  • NPOESS Centrals TIM
  • Geostationary Feature Track Winds Status
  • EOS Data Acquisition
  • Updated INSAT Requirements

3
DMSP Constellation Status 1
4
DMSP Constellation Status 2
  • F15 Attitude Control
  • Precision attitude control provided by 3 gyros
  • One failed in Sep 01 second showing signs of
    failure within months
  • Failure of second attitude gyro would introduce
earth-location errors up to 30km in F15 data
  • F12 and F14 have only a few months' life left on
    last remaining digital tape recorders
  • F13, despite age, remains healthy

5
DMSP F16 Latest Developments
  • DMSP flies in early-morning (F13) and mid-morning
    (F12, F14, F15) orbits
  • F16 slated for early-morning orbit F17 for
    mid-morning
  • F15 attitude control problem now makes
mid-morning orbit more likely to lose all
    operational spacecraft than early-morning orbit
  • AFWA requested F16 orbit change to mid-morning
  • DMSP CSAT concurred
  • Launch currently scheduled for 29 Jan 01
  • F16 has same gyros as F15 SMC and NOAA SOCC
    studying gyro failure mitigation strategies
  • F13 likely to fail before replacement by F17 in
early '04 user community and AFSPC need to
advocate for funding of other launch options if
    F17 needed sooner

6
AFWA SPP Product Transition Status 1
  • DMSP Mission Sensor Data Files
  • Legacy prep files still produced for F12-F15
will discontinue when no longer needed but NLT
    May 02 (mainframe decommissioning)
  • New Raw Sensor Data Record (RSDR) files
    operational now for F12-F15
  • Only RSDRs will be produced for F16

7
AFWA SPP Product Transition Status 2
  • Snow Depth Analysis
  • Legacy format product (SNODEP) will remain
operational NLT mainframe decommissioning in May
    02
  • Interface specs and sample files in new GRIB
format have been sent AFWA resolving format
    problems with FNMOC and NESDIS
  • New product will be operational as soon as
    problems resolved

8
AFWA SPP Product Transition Status 3
  • Cloud Analysis
  • Legacy format product (RTNEPH) will remain
operational NLT mainframe decommissioning in May
    02
  • Interface specs have been sent coordinating
additional changes now based on feedback
  • Sample files with higher resolution and in new
GRIB format will be sent by mid-Dec 01
  • New product will be operational when AFWA CDFS II
system becomes operational in May-Jul 02

9
NPOESS Centrals TIM
  • Centrals found similarities among present-day
satellite and projected NPOESS data consumption
    patterns
  • Centrals agreed that NPOESS IDPS should provide
    data management services
  • Would reduce data latency incurred by data
receipt, processing, storage, and retrieval at
    the Central
  • Would spare Centrals the expense of duplicating
services the IDPS will likely require for its own
    use
  • Centrals urged IPO to seek type-accreditation for
    IDPS to lessen security difficulties

10
Geostationary Feature Track Winds Status
  • AFWA Meteosat-5, Meteosat-7, and GMS-5 feature
track wind production considered operational by
    AFWA and FNMOC/NRL
  • AFWA providing sample GOES data to NRL/UW for
    GOES "McIDAS-independent" FTW algorithm
    development

11
EOS Data Acquisition
  • AFWA views EOS data, particularly from MODIS, as
    NPOESS risk reduction
  • Working with NASA/Goddard and NOAA/NESDIS to
    receive operational MODIS products
  • GSFC Rapid Response server and DREN initially
  • NOAA EOS server and possibly SPN end-state
  • Initial product request for limited set of MODIS
Level-1B and 2 products over Afghanistan AOR
  • Will grow product request to include more MODIS
data as experience and capability grows will add
    sounder instruments later

12
Updated INSAT Requirements
  • Currently receiving only INSAT-1D imager data
  • Poor earth-location and 1-1.5 hours latency
    limits utility
  • Request NESDIS investigate obtaining
  • INSAT-2E CCD data
  • Imager and CCD data from INSAT-3 series and
    following launches
  • Specs for INSAT direct-readout data
  • More frequent than 3-hourly imagery when
    available
  • Timeliness and reliability improvement
  • Earth-location algorithm for INSAT-1D
