2ORIGINS SNACK PACK1978- 2008
- Another example of IODEs historic ability to
step into the gap quickly in response to need. - In a pilot project 2 communities were provided
nutritious snacks and milk as nutritional
supplements for students. - Expectation that this would improve health and
learning.
3Breakfast Program 1978
- A mid-morning snack and milk was provided to
- 2 communities
- Davis Inlet
- North West
- River
41980 Snack Pack was born
- May, 1980- Labrador teachers identified a need in
their classrooms. - Concern based on scanty diets of their students
- Linked diet and the ability of children to learn
effectively. - IODE responded through the National Chapter given
strong support from primary chapters across
Canada. - Classrooms in coastal communities of Labrador
targeted for assistance.
5Snack Pack Year One
- The first year, 1980, Snack Pack involved
- The provision of milk, cookies, juice
- 7 communities were included
- 850 students were fed
- Cost 9,560
- Simple, basic nutritional needs supplemented
6Typical Order - 1990s
- A typical schools order included
- 25 cases of Plain Crackers
- 10 cases of Cheese Whiz
- 150 cases of Milk or Apple Juice
- 7 pails of Peanut Butter
- This order was for 136 Students for a year.
7In September, Dr. Bruce Vey, Director of
Education LSB, told President Chris Bateman that
the need for Snack Pack is very real
and continues.
Beverley May, Regional Education Officer WNLSB,
agreed during in depth discussions in coastal
Labrador.

- A typical schools order included
- 5 cases Premium Unsalted Crackers
- 60 cases Orange Juice
- 60 cases Farmers White Milk
- 60 cases Apple Juice
- 6 pails Peanut Butter
- 10 cases Corn Flakes
- This serves 235 Students for a year

- Cost almost 30,000 annually
- Peak service reached in 1998
- 16 communities participated at its peak

12Application Process
- Each year School Principals submit an
- Application Form
- How many students are to be served?
- Are there any special food needs?
- Do they have any inventory left?
- Applications are reviewed, modified as needed,
and approved.
13Logistics
- Shipping is by boat before freeze-up
- Spring
- schools identify School needs
- Summer
- the orders are finalized and placed
- Fall
- shipping to meet September school year start
- This becomes more challenging and costly
- as fuel prices escalate.
