  • Established over 50 years ago, the NCPTA is a
    registered charity and membership organisation
    providing support, advice and guidance to over
    13,000 Parent Teacher Associations in England,
    Wales and Northern Ireland.

  • with 13,000 members, NCPTA has 51 of the market

Why have A PTA?
  • bring together parents and teachers
  • enhance the home-school relationship
  • support the school help to raise its profile
  • involve the wider community
  • run fundraising social events
  • apply for external funds

PTAschanging with the times
  • 97 of PTAs report that fundraising is their main
    activity
  • more and more are playing an extended role in
    school life
  • over a third now report some form of activity to
    help other parents become involved in their
    childs education
  • 30 per cent are working with the local community
  • 10 per cent are working to support the extended
    schools agenda
  • independent research has shown that the
    top-performing 20 per cent of schools all have a
    PTA
  • A PTA can therefore be an asset to any school
    helping with the delivery of parental engagement,
    community links, the Every Child Matters and
    extended schools agenda.
  • The NCPTA believes that this demonstrates the
    good home school relationship that underpins
    success.

Having a PTA makes a financial difference too
  • total financial contribution from PTAs is 130
    million per year
  • average NCPTA member reports a profit of 4,000
    per year
  • over 10 of members raise in excess of 10,000
    and fundraising success is not linked to the size
    of the school
  • PTAs can apply for external funding, company
    matched and payroll giving and Gift Aid
  • Must be a registered charity

    foundation and inspiration for effective
    partnerships between parents and teachers whether
    in inner cities or in village schools

  • a small community school with just 153 pupils
  • the school and the PTA wanted to increase the
    number of parents involved
  • a Parent Helpers Handbook was suggested and it
    was quickly established that for this idea to be
    successful parents, teachers, governors and
    school staff would all need to contribute
  • since its introduction, the school has seen the
    number of parents helping in school increase by
    an amazing 60
  • the number of PTA volunteers and its gross income
    has almost doubled

Reasons not to get involved?
  • lack of time
  • lack of personal skills
  • Especially language and literacy
  • lack of confidence
  • ignorance of opportunities
  • feeling that someone else will do it
  • fear of the school gate
  • Based on personal negative history

How can a PTA engage parents?
  • fundraise
  • run social events for parents and children 
  • provide support for school trips, special events
  • run after-school clubs for sport, music or drama
  • encourage parents to be involved with their
    childs education
  • work with the schools senior management team to
    ensure parents views are represented
  • offer help and support in the classroom
  • help with the extended schools agenda/school
    travel plans/healthy eating status
