  • Homer Plessy (a Creole) was arrested for
    deliberately sitting in a white onlyrailroad
    car.
  • The Supreme Court set the precedentthat
    separate facilities for blacks and whites were
    constitutional as long as they were equal.

Brown v. Board of Education 1954
  • Eight year old Linda Brown was refused enrollment
    in an all white school that was just a few
    blocks from her home. Consequently, she was
    forced to walk twenty blocks to attend an all
    black school.
  • NAACP filed a law suit on behalf of the Brown
    family against the Board of Education in Topeka,
    KS.
  • The case went to the Supreme Court which ruled
    that separate but equal has no place in the
    field of public education.
