5Typical ICU house
Go Back
This is a typical house in ICU. You cant believe
that this is within the Tokyo area. Lots of
nature and space between houses.
6ICU Field
Go Back
This is ICU sports field. They play American
football, soccer, rugby, hockeyetc. And there is
a baseball field as well. Maybe you cant see but
the white building in the background has a gym
and a pool, and they do all kinds of sports.
7ICU Entrance
Go Back
This is the driveway into ICU. In Spring time, it
is very beautiful with pink sakura blossoms. But
also its very crowded with people picnicking.

8ICU Church
Go Back
This is one of the churches in ICU. Every weekend
its crowded with people celebrating their
weddings and anniversaries. It is a very popular
spot for Japanese people.
9Bakayama
Go Back
This is called Bakayama. Baka means stupid and
yama means mountain. There is no particular
reason for this naming but its a place for
students to lie around and talk or sleep. Some
times they forget the lecture time, so maybe
because of that its named Stupid.
10Off road
Go Back
This is off road. There are lots of holes that
are remnants from bombing of WW2. You are not
allowed in here unless you are with a guide, such
as a campus resident.
11Nature
Go Back
This is what it looks like if you go into the
wilderness of ICU. There are a lot of spiderwebs,
snakes, lizards, crows, and all kinds of wildlife.
12Bamboo
Go Back
This is a bamboo forest. We get lots of Takenoko
(bamboo shoot), every Spring, and we eat a lot of
them. They are very good, and a traditional
Japanese food.

13Nature
Go Back
This is typical view of ICU wilderness. There are
lots of springs and most of the lower parts of
ICU are wet. People who visit ICU dont usually
come to these nice spots.
14Bomb Shelter
Go Back
This is a bokugo, which is the remnant of a bomb
shelter. It is very dark inside, and very deep.
There are a lot of these around ICU, and they
stretch up to 3km underground, towards Mitaka
Station. As you can see, they are all blocked
with a gate, or a ditch because they are very
dangerous some children have died in such places.
15Middle East Museum
Go Back
This is Middle East Museum, they change the
display every 2nd month. It is free for students
under 15. And for adults it is 500 yen. Unless if
you are a resident of Mitaka-shi, it is 100 yen.
16Water Spring
Go Back
This is a typical spring site. Around here about
2 or 3 springs come out. There are wasabi and
cress plants growing here, and we eat them
sometimes. But they are really hot, in a
different way from chili.
17Crab
Go Back
Find Crab
This is a photo of springwater coming out of the
ground. There are freshwater crabs here (can you
see the one in the photo?). They are about 3 to 5
cm in size but very strong at nipping your
fingers! There are also large toads.
18Crab

Hide Crab
This is a photo of springwater coming out of the

19ICU museum
Go Back
This is ICU museum. It tells you about ancient
history (especially of the Jomon people) and
about the area of ICU. Once in a while they have
special exhibitions that are also interesting.
20Hachiman Shrine
Go Back
This is Hachiman Shrine. We have Fall festivals
where there are little entertainment shops like
scooping a gold fish or super balls, or some
shops that sell food such as Yakisoba, Yakitori
and Takoyaki.
21Shrine
Go Back
This a shrine that is really inconspicuous. No
one really notices and its a kind of a hidden
shrine.
22Field
Go Back
This is a typical farm or field of the Osawa
area. In the Autumn you can go there and help
them harvest their crops. You might get a little
reward!
23Observatory
Go Back
This is one observatory in the National Astronomy
Centre (Tokyo University). In Japanese it is
called tenmondai. At special times in the
Winter, people aged over 12 can look into the
telescope and look at stars.
24Nogawa
Go Back
This is Nogawa. Its one of the few rivers that
has some Nature left. Most of the rivers in Tokyo
are concreted and ugly. But this one still has
grass and animals around. Like Ducks, Sagi, Koi,
crayfishes, kingfishers, etc.
25Ko Hachiman
Go Back
This is Furu or Ko Hachiman Shrine. They have a
festival every year and lots of shops come, and
we play there in the evening of the festival.
26Water Mill
Go Back
This is a Watermill. It is now moved by
electricity, but in the olden days it was moved
by the power of water. There were a lot of these
in those days and they helped the farmers grind
their grain.
27Hotaru Village
Go Back
This is Hotaru village. There are crayfishes,
snakes, lizards, crabs, and all kinds of
wildlife. I used to catch them and take them home
every day. It was a great fun, and I still see
kids playing around here.
28Rice Field
Go Back
This is dried up rice field. In the Spring, local
people pour water in and plant rice shoots. In
Autumn local school kids harvest the crops.

29Wasabi Field
Go Back
This is Wasabi Field. Wasabi is a Japanese plant
eaten with various foods. It is very important to
Japanese culture. It only grows on clean water,
and this shows that Nogawa is still clean unlike
the other rivers in Tokyo.
30Ancient Bones
Go Back
These are ancient human bones, housed near
Nogawa. This shows that this area has been
civilized for a long long time. Nogawa has been a
very important river for a long time. It makes
you think what kind of life they had.
31Ryugen Temple
Go Back
This is Ryugen Temple. This is a special place
because a famous Japanese warriors bones lie
here.
32Kondo Isami
Go Back
This is a statue of Kondo Isami. If you are
interested in him, click here.
33Ojizousama
Go Back
This is Ojizousama. Ji means earth, land and
zou means mother. Its for parents that have lost
their child and it tells to the child that their
parents are here and thinking about them. In
the olden days it wasnt uncommon to lose a child
from illness.
34Nogawa Park
Go Back
This is Nogawa Park. People come here to play
with their child or let the child play with their
friends. It seems that not many places like this
are left in Tokyo area.
35View to ICU
Go Back
This is a view of ICU from Nogawa Park. You can
see there are a lot of trees and nature in ICU.
