We had to produce a new design for the
Crameltonian Magazine we were told we have to
produce the front cover, contents page and a
double-page spread. We also have to produce a
presentation which must include all of the
information which we feel necessary for us to win
the bid. It also has to include information on
what we decided the target audience was, the
unique selling point, our market research,
strengths and weaknesses of our designs, and
obviously why our team should win the bid!

Before we begun to plan everything, we first have
to ask ourselves the question above here are a
few of our answers You can tell people whats
going on at school some parents and members of
the community might be unsure about as what is
going on at school, so a newspaper would be a
great way to inform them on current events. It
can be a reason to talk to other people you can
discuss what is the news, and along the way make
some new friends. It is a way for the pupils to
be involved in the way the school communicates
with the community by writing articles, pupils
can share their thoughts and opinions on current
events, and of course gain knowledge on how the
world of newspapers work if they want to peruse a
job in journalism.

Our main way of researching was to design a
survey that give us answers on who actually read
the newspaper what kind of stories they like the
best what other newspapers they read and what
they think makes a quality newspaper. We also
used the internet to search for other school
newspapers that were published in the area and
what things are going on in Cramlington (shops
opening, school changes, news houses being
built). We found out that some of the local
schools, such as Amble Middle School, Coquet
High, Durriage Bay Middle School, and lots more,
all have school newspapers. Additionally there
are a lot of newspapers around such as The News
Post Leader and The Chronicle.

We did a survey to find out what our target
audience was and the kind of stories they like
reading. We decided that the target audience
should be parents as the majority of the people
who did our survey who said they actually read
the newspaper were parents. The most popular
kinds of stories people like to read are whats
happening in the local area reviews of things
exam results and changes to the school. We asked
a range of people from a variety of age groups.
We only asked family and friends as we knew they
live in the area which the Crameltonian is
published.

Our team worked quite well. When we first got the
design brief, we came up with a list of things
that we needed to do, and we allocated jobs. Our
only problems as a team was the fact that we
sometimes saved files as a format that was not
compatible with Microsoft Office. We overcame
that by just doing the work again we didnt
write much on those documents anyway. Another
problem was the fact that we had to do a survey
at home, and the printer at school wasnt
working. We overcame this by sending an email to
each other with the documents on via Frog.

Our newspaper is going to be unique because we
have decided to add a section inside it on
bargains. In this current economical climate, we
have found that people are using more coupons and
buying cheaper products than the last few
years. Our newspaper is going to have print out
coupons for use in local stores. Not only will
this generate advertising revenue for us, but the
stores will benefit from more sales, and of
course the reader will be happy to get things at
bargain prices. Our newspaper is also going to
have an insert in it for puzzles. The puzzles are
going to be of different kinds and there will be
some suitable for all age groups. Spot The

Front Page We chose the logo because we think you
need the school badge on the school paper so
people will recognize it as a publication of the
school. We chose the font because it was the
most professional newspaper text we could find
and it fitted the purpose very well. The layout
has enough space on it for, a contents block, two
photos and one main story and it's headline. The
headline space is quite large so the text can be
very eye-catching, which is to persuade a
possible reader to want to read it inside the
newspaper.

We decided not to have a full contents page, but
rather a contents square, which would mean that
we wouldn't have one boring page with just a list
of contents on. The first page is going to be
about things that are happening in and around
school. The second page is going to be about exam
results and news from around Cramlington. The
third page is going to be a continuation of news
from around Cramlington and some reviews of
things. The fourth page is going to be our unique
page with bargains on. The final page will be
about the sporting club such as clubs and
sporting achievements.

We chose this layout because we think that it
would attract the readers attention. We used
colourful pictures and the title is big and bold
so that it attracts peoples attention. The whole
idea or this idea was to make the new
Crameltonian look better than the old one and to
show more information on whats going on around
us. The layout makes the reader look for more
information and not to just read it like a
list. We put the right information with the right
picture so that the reader can look at the
information without being confused.

• You should choose to use our design because
• It is cost efficient we would be gaining
  revenue from the coupons, which act as an
  advertising incentive to visit the stores.
• It has stories about local areas the 'big'
  newspapers, and even ones for the local county,
  contain stories about a large place, and not
  mostly Cramlington. People don't really care
  about what happens in places they have never
  visited, or live in, so we decided to have
  stories focusing on the area we live in.
• It is suitable for all ages even though our
  survey told us our target audience should be
  parents, we still had a number of readers that
  were not parents. Our newspaper will contain
  stories about things that everyone will be
  interested in.
