Title: Deciduous Forest Biome
1Deciduous Forest Biome
- Deciduous biomes are located primarily in the
eastern half of the United States, Canada,
Europe, parts of Russia, China, and Japan

The average temperature of the forest is about 50
degrees F. The average amount of rainfall in the
forest is 30 to 60 inches a year. As the seasons
change, so do the colors of the leaves of the
deciduous. During the winter months water is
generally not available to keep the leaves of
some plants alive. Therefore, the leaves of some
plants fall off and grow back in the spring.
Those plants, like evergreens, keep their leaves
during the winter have special adaptations to
stay alive. You can learn more about the
vegetation of deciduous biomes.
6Climate
Deciduous Forest The mid-latitude deciduous
forest biome is located between the polar regions
and the tropics. Because of its location, air
masses from both the cold polar region and the
warm tropical region contribute to the changes
of climate in this biome.
"Deciduous" means to fall off, or shed,
seasonally. Just as the name implies, these
deciduous trees shed their leaves each fall.
Lying on the forest floor, the leaves decay. As
the leaves decompose, the nutrients contained in
the leaves are absorbed by the soil. For this
reason, the soils of this biome tend to be very
fertile. Because this biome has fertile soil and
a long, 5 to 6 month, growing season, many
deciduous forests have been converted into
agricultural regions.

9Plants
In the deciduous forest there are many flowers
like the passion berry and the blue lily. There
are many other flowers but those are some of the
main ones. The Deciduous forest does not have
much vegetation but there are many trees that
contain outrageous amounts of flowers. Animals
need these trees because they provide shelter and
some use them for food and even water from the
leaves. The trees adapt to this forest by having
thick bark barriers on the trees to keep the
animals out and the trees from dying.
10Habitat
Much of the vast deciduous forests that covered
many parts of North America, Asia, and Europe has
been cleared for wood and agriculture. Animals
such as bears, deer, raccoons, badgers, foxes,
and squirrels are common. The thick layer of
dead leaves on the forest floor provides a
perfect habitat for countless millions of tiny
invertebrates, so insect-eating birds can find
plenty of things to eat too.
11What's A Temperate Deciduous Forest Like?
One of the most interesting features of the
temperate deciduous forest is its changing
seasons. The word "deciduous" means exactly
what the leaves on these trees do change color
in autumn, fall off in the winter, and grow back
again in the spring. This adaptation helps trees
in the forest survive winter.
