Definition
  • A sentence must
  • Have a Subject
  • Have a Verb
  • Express a complete thought

Basic parts
  • Subject
  • Whom or what the sentence or clause is about
  • Predicate
  • Tells something about the subject
  • Some residents of the desert can survive a long
    drought.
  • Particularly noteworthy is the Australian frog.
  • For up to three years it can live without
    rainfall.

Subject
  • Simple subject the main word or word group that
    tells whom or what the sentence is about
  • Complete Subject simple subject plus any words
    or word groups that modify it
  • A dog with this pedigree
  • Both of these birds
  • The Taj Mahal in India

Predicate
  • Simple predicate AKA the verb or verb phrase, is
    the main word or word group that tells something
    about the subject
  • Complete predicate the verb plus all the words
    that modify it and complete its meaning
  • Snare their prey in intricate webs
  • Has been looking for you all morning
  • Have been found

Compounds
  • Compound Subject Two or more subjects joined by
    a conjunction, using the same verb
  • You and I went walking.
  • Compound Verb Two or more verbs joined by a
    conjunction, using the same subject
  • I went walking and sightseeing.

Identify
  • To find the subject, first find the verb.
  • Then, ask who? or what? before the verb
  • My cousin from Finland will arrive.
  • On the other side of the river stands a cabin.

Prepositional Phrases
  • Dont let these sneaky fellas trick you!
  • The subject is NEVER in a prepositional phrase!
  • So, () out the preps before they trap you
  • One (of my cousins) has visited Ghana.
  • On top (of the building) is a spire.

More tricks- There and Here
  • Although there or here may begin a sentence, it
    is rarely the subject.
  • Usually, it is an adverb telling where.
  • Sometimes, its just an expletive (place holder).
  • There are your gloves.
  • Here is my nephew.
  • There is not much time left.

  • Understood You
  • Sometimes, you is the subject of the sentence,
    but is not in the sentence its just understood
    to be there
  • (you) Wait!
  • (you) Hold this for me.

  • Sentences asking questions can be hard to figure
    out
  • So, turn them around
  • Make
  • Were your friends early?
  • Your friends were early.
