Analyze Learners
  • This unit is intended for 16-17 year old
    students.
  • It will be used in a 11th grade classroom.

Day 1
  • Introduction to Vietnam region.
  • PowerPoint presentation connecting Vietnam to the
    Cold War.
  • Divide class into 3 groups. Direct them to do a
    Project on one of three countries Vietnam, Laos,
    or Cambodia.
  • 5 minute presentation on their country.

Day 2
  • Lecture on Gulf of Tonkin incident and class
    discussion.
  • Lecture on President Johnson.
  • Pass out 2 handouts President Johnson Public
    opinion polls Vietnam Quotes.

Day 3
  • Lecture on public opinion and the war,
    counterculture, the war protest.
  • Handout Yusef Komunyakaa poem.
  • Separate students into groups of 3-4.
  • Each group will choose a war song from this era
    and research a picture that they feel best
    represents their song and present it to the class
    the next class period.

Day 4
  • Group presentations
  • Video The History Channel Legacy of Kent State

Day 5
  • Lecture and class discussion on Kent State
    Massacre and other anti-war protest.
  • Worksheet Important people of the Vietnam
    Protest.
  • I will write this question on the board Was
    Kent State related to the end of the war in
    Vietnam?
  • I will ask the students to write an essay in
    response to the question and it will be due the
    next class period.

Day 6
  • Finish up discussion on Kent State Massacre and
    protest.
  • I will then prompt the students to look up the
    1st Amendment of the US Constitution in their
    text books.
  • I will then divide the class up into two groups
    and they will debate over the limits of this
    Amendment and if the protest during the 1960s
    were in violation of it.

Day 7
  • I will lecture on the end of the war and the
    impacts it has had on the world as we know it
    today.
  • I will then prompt the students to review all of
    their material about the war. They will then
    write a news report essay on one event/issue that
    they have learned about dealing with the Vietnam
    War.

Learner Participation
  • Every day there is either a class discussion or
    group project that will give them a break from my
    lectures.
  • I will also keep them interested by not giving
    them all of the information myself. It will be up
    to them to do research and develop their own
    responses and opinions about this era and about
    the war.
