Title: Compare and Contrast

1
Compare and Contrast
  • Writing with
  • a proper sense of purpose and
  • a clear major argument

2
Outline
  • 1. Basic Structure
  • 2. Objects
  • Timeliness (Case 1)
  • On equal footings and with significant
    differences or similarities.
  • 3. Meaningful conclusion
  • Messengers
  • Two ESL methods
  • 4. Aspects to cover
  • Compare two restaurants
  • Two modes of life
  • Air mail and email
  • Two songs

3
Basic Structure
  • Thesis statement in the first paragraph, or the
    end of the first part.
  • Lay out the basis of your comparison (e.g. define
Direct Method and Total Physical Response
    Recommended Student program and JECC)
  • Development of ideas Point by Point or Block to
    Block

4
Timeliness Case 1 Different Ways of Entering
College
  • Recommended Student program and JECC
  • What does it mean now?
  • Besides JCEE, there are the Recommended Student
program, Gifted Student program, and Direct
    application.
  • Application ??0-2 subjects ??2-3 subjects in
    Basic Subject Competence Test)

5
Our dept. as an example
  • ???????????????????????1.??(????C)2.??(????B)
    ??????????1.??2.??(????50)?????????1.????
    2.???3.???4.????5.????6.????7.????

6
Major Argument?
  • --JCEE serves the need of ordinary students who
do not have special interest on specific subject,
while recommended program provides a broader
chance for those students who have exact interest
and goal on certain type of field in their
    future.
  • If they were shy and feel nervous while facing
people, JCEE would be a way for them. But if they
were outgoing and have some special talent as
well as concrete direction toward their life, I
believe recommended program would be the best
    system for them.

7
Possible Problems
  • Subjective elements in none-JCEE ways
  • Recommendation Letter
  • Non-Academic Records (contest awards)
  • Appearance and Oral performances
  • Traditional Exam
  • One Exam decides all
  • Spreading ones efforts in all the subjects.

8
Proper Objects two English Magazines
  • A English Lets Talk in English
  • Attracting the readers Colorful, Multimedia,
    interesting topics
  • Reading support vocabulary and translation
  • Different ways of marking and explaining
  • new words (A does not give examples to all),
  • A -- give grammatical rules
  • Pre-reading and Post-reading activities
  • A is easier. ? for first and second graders.

9
Meaningful conclusion
  • 1. Differences between MSN and ICQ
  • MSN looks better and provides more emoticon,
  • ICQ has more meaningful features
  • ? ICQ more popular
  • 2. TPR and Direct Method
  • Compared in terms the way body is used, the role
of native language and relationship between
teacher and student? The best teaching method
would be the one that combine all methods
according to different topics, functions or
    content.

Aspects to Cover
  • Two restaurants Chez Jimmy Ting Jun (??)
location, elegance vs. leisure, service, ? If
you want to share a romantic night with your
lover, try Chez Jimmy if you want to get
together with your family or friends, try Ting
    Jun (??).

11
Aspects to Cover
  • Two modes of life calmer life after being a monk
I know how to turn my negative thoughts into
positive thoughts. I am seldom indulged in my own
feelings and emotions. I can easily get out of
the limitation of my thoughts. ?
  • Negative thoughts, feelings how about learning?

12
Air mail and email
  • Although airmail seems old fashion and out of
time and e-mail is updated, both airmail and
email have its own advantages and disadvantages,
and these two forms are actually complementary.
  • ? speed, safety, efforts taken,
  • real object. vs. invisible form ? which one can
    be kept? Environmental issue?

13
Two songs
  • I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor
  • Survivor by Destinys Child

14
  • In the beginning of the lyrics, Gloria Gaynor
sings first I was afraid, I was petrified, kept
thinking I could never live without you in my
liveI grew strong and Destinys Child sing,
you thought that Id be weak without you but Im
stronger. As we can see, the word strong
appears in both songs here. The characters in the
lyrics thought they were helpless and could not
go on with their lives. However, they became
tougher emotionally and learned how to move on
(Kept thinking I could never live without you by
my sideI learned how to carry on and Thought
that I would self-destruct but Im still here).
