Title: Persuasive Writing

1
Persuasive Writing
  • Student Models

2
Prompt
  • The principal of your school has suggested that
assigning more homework will cause students
    grades to improve.
  • Think about the effect that a greater amount of
homework would have on your grades and your
    friends grades.
  • Now write to convince your principal whether
increasing the amount of homework will cause
    students grades to improve.

3
Introduction Essentials
  • What is the issue?
  • What is my opinion of the issue?
  • What can I say to persuade the reader to my
    opinion?

4
Introduction
  • Noooo! Dont give us extra homework. Extra
homework will not prove anything. Giving us, the
students, more homework will only prove three
reasons it might decrease our grades, our
behaviors might change, and there might not be
    any time to do anything.

5
Conclusion Essentials
  • Restate the issue.
  • Restate your opinion of the issue.
  • The conclusion should be VERY strong alerting
the reader to the writers side of the issue and
    suggesting a call to action.
  • The special appeal should be made by use if a
quote, an inspirational thought or a thought
    provoking statement or question.

6
  • To wrap it all up, homework would not help
grades or education of students at all. It would
simply overwhelm them, take up all of their time,
and provide an impossible pile of work. So please
DO NOT give these children any more homework than
they already have! Children try hard every day in
school, and they do not need unnecessary
assignments. So please, spare them from the
    madness of too much!

7
  • In conclusion, I strongly disagree with giving
more homework because it will absolutely decrease
our grades, behaviors will change, and we will
have no free time to do anything. I speak for all
students. We dont need more homework!

8
  • Mr. Burch, increasing the amount of homework
really isnt a good idea. The students grades
will lower, the extra activities will be
canceled, and kids would have to stay up later at
night to finish their work. While you might think
that adding homework will help students, the
reality is that it will not. This is the time for
less homework and more in-school learning!

9
The 5 Steps of Elaboration
  • Begin by saying something about one part of the
    thesis (one of the reasons).
  • Say something more
  • Say something more
  • Give detailed information by either providing the
reader with a vivid word picture or an example of
a personal experience which lets the reader know
you know what youre talking about. An easy way
to lead into this is to use I remember or
    Imagine
  • Wrap it up!

Elaboration Qualities of a good teacher prompt
  • Also, a good teacher must show enthusiasm in
his or her work. A teachers enthusiasm makes a
class more fun and exciting for the students as
well as the teacher. Being enthusiastic about
their work, teachers may help pupils learn in
more creative ways. For example, in third grade
my class began to learn fractions. My teacher
purchased each of us chocolate bars that could
break into pieces. We took out pieces and put
them back until we understood how fractions
worked. In the end, we all got to eat our
chocolate. This gave us a memorable way to learn
    fractions.

Elaborative Example Favorite Holiday
  • First of all, Thanksgiving provides my family
a chance to return to the place we all love, our
grandfathers farm. From the tall oak trees that
line the driveway to the creek which trickles
through the pastures, every part of the farm
holds adventures for young and old alike. It
reminds us of the wealth a heritage of land can
offer us. I remember one Thanksgiving my
grandfather pulled us all behind his bright red
tractor in an old rickety wooden cart full of
soft hay on a hay ride through the farm The
shadows of the trees danced around us as we rode
across the fields. Later, we sat beneath the
twinkling stars and gazed at the campfire.
Returning to my grandfathers farm is the one
    reason I love Thansgiving.

More elaboration
  • Next, I enjoy Christmas because I love the
Christmas weather. During the summer everything
is very humid, but winter comes and the air is
crisp, cool and refreshing. The thought that
Christmas is just around the corner delights me.
Sometimes my family and I go up north to Maine
for the winter, and I love to play in the clean
white snow that falls on the ground and sends
chills down my body. The winter air soothes me,
making it one of my favorite things about
    Christmas.
