1
Welcome to Mattie Lively Elementary Media Center
  • Where Learning is an Adventure!
  • Audra Nelson
  • ITEC 7132/Fall 2004

2
A Glance at Mattie Lively Elementary
  • MLES is an elementary school housing grades K-5.
  • The population of MLES is approximately 360
    students.
  • Mattie Lively has one full-time Media Specialist
    and one half-time Media paraprofessional.
  • MLES just celebrated her 50th anniversary- the
    facility shows its age!

3
The Media Center
  • The MLES Media Center is housed in a very small
facility. Currently, the space in the media
center is utilized efficiently. The media
specialist has made the most of the available
space she just needs more of it! Join me for a
tour of the MLES Media Center!

4
The Original Floor Plan
5
Welcome!
  • The Media Center opens to an outside breezeway
at the front of the school. The Media Center is
    easily accessible.

6
The Circulation Desk
  • The circulation desk is located to the right as
    you come in the door.
  • Students drop off books to be returned. They
scan their books to check them out as they leave.
  • Teachers and students indicated that traffic flow
can get congested here because of the close
    proximity to the door.

7
Computer Stations
  • Students and teachers have access to 10 computers
    in the media center.
  • These computers are used for research and for
    searching for materials.
  • Teachers and students would like to have more
computers so that an entire class can use them at
    the same time.

8
Reference Materials
  • The Reference materials for students and
teachers are located on the wall adjacent to the
    computer stations.

9
Work Space
  • Tables and chairs are set up in a section.
  • Students can sit here to do projects, read, or do
    research.
  • The tables and chairs are very close together.
Teachers and students would like to have more
    space to spread out.
  • The K-1 teachers and students would like to have
    smaller tables and chairs.

10
The Book Collection
  • The books are organized on low shelves.
  • The books are categorized into easy fiction,
    nonfiction, and harder fiction sections.
  • Teachers and students feel that this area is
    crowded.

11
Teacher Resources
  • A Media Production room is available with the
Ellison machine, videos, DVDs, and paper cutters.
  • A storage room houses a laminating machine, the
    school store, manipulatives, and extra
    equipment.
  • Teachers indicated that they would use these
spaces more often if there was more room for
    things to be organized efficiently.

12
The Media Specialists Office
  • The Media Specialists Office is located in the
corner of the library. The location of the
office does give the Media Specialist a view into
the main traffic area of the library.
  • The Media Specialist would like to have more
storage space that is separate from her office.
She uses her office to store various equipment.

13
The New Facilities Plan for the MLES Media
Center
  • The plan is to build a new facility that would
triple the size of the existing facility.
  • Many of the existing features will be included in
the same locations, but the size of each space
    will be expanded.
  • Additional space will allow for more leisure
areas that will invite students and teachers to
    spend more time here.
  • The media center will have a warm, academic
atmosphere, which encourages students to engage
in using all of the information resources
    available.

14
The Revised Floor Plan
15
The First Impression
  • The first impression of the Media Center should
    be inviting and child friendly.
  • As students and teachers enter the library, a
leisure reading area will be set up with a
    display of new books.
  • Students indicated that they would like to have a
place to relax and read. They liked the idea of
    beanbags over hard chairs!
  • A reading loft would encourage students to grab a
    book and stay!

16
The Circulation Desk
  • The Circulation Desk will be located adjacent to
the main entrance. However, it will be more
centrally located along the wall as you enter.
  • The Media Specialist will have a better view of
the workspaces and the entrance will not be
crowded by the traffic at the Circulation Desk.

17
Computer Workstations
  • Computer workstations will be located in several
areas of the media center. Computers will be
    networked for internet access.
  • One station will be adjacent to the circulation
desk for access to the catalog.
  • A computer lab will be set up with at least 20
computers for classes to use. This lab will have
    a retractable wall.

18
Group/Individual Study Areas
  • Tables and chairs will be set up in three
different sections to give ample space for
    students.
  • Teachers stated that they would like to have room
to take their classes without interfering with
    other classes.
  • One section will include smaller tables and
chairs. The K-1 students and teachers both liked
    this idea.

19
Books, Books, Books!!!
  • The books will be organized into sections
(fiction, non-fiction, easy, harder) so that
students can easily find what they need.
  • The shelves will be low and placed with at least
42 between stacks for handicap access and less
    crowded conditions.
  • The book collection will be moved from its
current location. Currently, it is located
immediately to the left as you enter and the
stacks block the overall view into the library.
In the new facility, the stacks will be in plain
view, but they will not crowd the entrance.

20
Story Time
  • A Storytelling Area will be set up on the back
wall opposite the circulation desk. Teachers
expressed this need to promote the joy of reading
    and listening to stories.
  • A reading terrace that holds up to 25 children
will be located in this area.
  • A round rug will also be located here for circle
    time.

21
Extra Classroom and Conference Room
Two Ideas for Conference Rooms
  • The new facility will house a Conference Room
large enough to hold 30 people. The
administration and the teachers expressed the
need for a central meeting area.
  • The room can be used for large and small-group
activities by both students, faculty, and the
    community (See Facilities Use Policies).

22
Distance Learning Lab
  • A distance learning lab will also be included in
    the new facility.
  • Wireless laptops can be utilized here as well.
  • The room will be used as a television studio as
    well.

23
Multimedia Production
  • This room will house the necessary equipment and
resources for the production of all types of
    media.
  • The room will be located next to the distance
    learning lab/TV studio.

24
The Storage Room
  • The storage room will be located in the same
location as in the existing facility.
  • The size of the room will be increased.
  • The room will have a door accessible to the
outside so that equipment can be transported into
and out of the Media Center without entering the
    common area.

25
Facilities Use Policies
  • The current policy states that the media center
should be accessible to individual students and
groups throughout the instructional day during
each instructional day of the school year.
  • The policy also states that the facility should
be accessible for Georgia Board of Education
approved courses outside of the regular day.
  • The use of the facility by non-school related
groups is not addressed. A policy needs to be
developed to address the use of the facility by
the outside community. In the new facility, the
use of the conference room and the distance
learning lab would specifically need to be
    addressed.

26
The New MLES Media CenterA Learning Community
  • The focus of the new Media Center will be student
    learning.
  • Information access and use will be visible as
soon as you enter the door.
  • The Media Center will offer the resources and
space for collaboration by the Media Specialist,
    teachers and the students.
  • The facility will promote information literacy as
an integral part of the students education.
