Title: The Three Monks
1The Three Monks
2During an art lesson the children, at May 4 Road,
watched an award winning animation about the
traditional Chinese story of The Three Monks. The
children then drew a sequence of cartoons to
retell the story.
Three Monks, directed by A Da, is an adaptation
of a folk proverb one monk will shoulder two
buckets of water, two monks will share the load,
but add a third and no one will want to fetch
water. See the next page for a summary of the
story.
3Based on an old Chinese saying, three monks, no
water, this story teaches a gentle, humorous
lesson about responsibility Three monks allow
personal pride to interfere with the performance
of daily tasks, each believing that the other two
should be the ones to go downhill to fetch water.
When a fire breaks out, however, they understand
how silly theyve been and work together to save
the temple.
