Types of Cells

Robert Hooke
  • In 1665, Robert Hooke was the first person to use
the term cell in reference to Biology because
of the units of dead cork cells reminded him of
the small boxy living quarters of monks called
    cells.
  • He also made the first simple microscope
    containing only three lenses.

Anton van Leeuwenhoek
  • Leeuwenhoek improved upon the simple microscope
    by making better lenses.
  • He was the first to discover and describe red
blood cells and bacteria taken from scraping off
    his teeth.

4
Cell Theory
  • All living things are made of one or more cells.
  • Cells are the basic units of structure and
    function in organisms
  • All cells arise from existing cells.

5
Prokaryotic Cells
6
Prokaryotic Cells
  • A prokaryotic cell lacks a nucleus and
    membrane-bound organelles.
  • Contains single strand DNA in a ring.
  • Contains ribosomes.
  • Smaller than eukaryotic cells.

7
Eukaryotic Cells
8
Eukaryotic Cells
  • Eukaryotic cells are found in all organisms
except in the Kingdoms Eubacteria and
    Archaebacteria.
  • They contain a true nucleus and membrane bound
    organelles.
  • An organelle is a tiny organ found in cells.
