9Epidemiologic situation
- As of 24 August 2005 a total of 800 AFP cases
were reported (Table 1). - The date of onset of 1st and last AFP cases is
shown by province (Table 2). - The number of laboratory confirmed cases are 437
distributed all over 21 of the 22 provinces
(Table 3). - The number of reported AFP and confirmed cases
continue to decrease although it is now in the
high transmission season in Yemen. - After a peak of almost 50 cases per week for 4
weeks from mid April to mid May. The average
number of cases decreased to half (22 cases per
week) until end June. Then, it further decreased
in July to an average less than 10 cases per
week. - Twelve provinces have no cases since the
beginning of July 2005. - Half of the 69 cases positive which have appeared
after 10 days from the beginning of the first
mOPV round (30 May-1 June) were from 3 provinces
Hajjah (13), Saadah (10) and Dhamar (10). The
performance in some of the districts of these
provinces in May round was deficient in certain
aspects and there were parental refusals. These
deficiencies were mostly overcome during the July
round.
10Recent/Planned Activities
- The August NID will be completed today 24 August
2005. - WHO provided technical support by 8

observers and national independent monitors. - The 3 provinces presently contributing most of
the cases were vaccinated with MOPV1 left over
from May and July rounds.
