Title: SPSS Chapter 7 ChiSquare and Measures of Association

1
SPSS Chapter 7Chi-Square and Measures of
Association
2
Measures of Association
  • Kendalls tau-b
  • Use if table is square (e.g. 2x2 or 5x5), both
variables have same number of values,
  • Ordinal Level IV and DV
  • Directional Measures
  • Plus () sign positive relationship, increase
    in IV Increase in DV
  • Negative (-) sign negative relationship,
increase in IV decrease in DV
  • Proportional Reduction In Error Measure
  • Extent to which values of IV predict values of
    DV.
  • Close to 0 (zero) little predictive value,
  • close to poles 1 or -1, IV has a lot of
    predictive value

3
Measures of Association
  • Kendalls tau-c
  • Use if table is nonsquare (e.g. 2x5, 3x4),
  • variables have different number of categories
  • Ordinal Level IV and DV
  • PRE Measure
  • Directional Measures
  • Plus () sign positive relationship, increase
    in IV Increase in DV
  • Negative (-) sign negative relationship,
increase in IV decrease in DV

4
Measures of Association
  • Lambda
  • PRE measure (generally preferred over non-PRE
    measures)
  • Both nominal level IV and DV
  • Tends to underestimate strength of a
relationship, especially when one variable has
    low variation,
  • Cramers V
  • Both nominal level IV and DV
  • not-PRE measure
  • Ranges from 0 (no relationship) to 1 (perfect
    relationship)

5
Ordinal Level Relationship
  • Hypothesis
  • In comparing individuals, people with higher
levels of education will be more likely to favor
environmental regulations than will be people
    with lower levels of education.

6
Nominal Level Relationship
  • In comparing individuals, women will be more
likely to favor gun control than will men,
    controlling for political trust
  • NES2000
  • gunctrol2
  • gender
  • poltrst2
