Title: Managing Energy Consumption

1
Managing Energy Consumption
  • ENERGY SAVING IS GOOD IF IT REDUCES OUR
    OPERATIONAL COST.
  • ENERGY SAVING IS BETTER IF IT SAVES US MONEY.

2
Monitor Power Management
  • Why Should I Use Power Management?
  • At TescoHSC over 25 of energy consumed is by
PCs and Monitors (Do you know how much is 25 in
    cost? 7 Lacs approx)
  • More than half of this energy could be saved by
    taking two simple steps
  • IT infra to enable power management functions
that place monitors in low-power mode during
    periods of inactivity.
  • Employees initiative to Turn off PCs and
    monitors after work
  • These two simple steps will result in ?????

3
Energy saved Comparison
  • Every monitor will consume 100 watts of energy
    per hour
  • We have about 1500 monitors at our campus
    approx
  • Monitor Usage / day 10 Hrs
  • Monitor Unused / day 14 Hrs x 100watts
    1.4Kwh
  • 1.4Kwh x 1500 Nos 2100Kwh/day
  • 2100Kwh x One month 63000Kwh
  • 63000Kwh 63000Units / Month

Can Light 250 residences for about a month
4
And the fact is .
5
Are we environment friendly ?
DO YOU KNOW? 1 tonne of CO2 emissions is released
by Consuming 2,325 kWh Electricity And we at
TescoHSC alone emit 28 tons of CO2 by consuming
63000kwh /month (Wasted by keeping the monitor ON
when not in use) 75 big sized trees required to
digest 28 tons of CO2 emissions produced by us
6
How To tell Employees
  • Encourage your colleagues to turn lights off when
rooms while leaving(even if they plan to come
    back in a few minutes).
  • If daylight alone is adequate, ask them to leave
    their lights off.
  • Use placards in work areas.
  • Use signs in public areas.
  • Display your Environmental Policy.
  • Small signs calling attention to specific areas
    of savings.

7
Employee Power Saves Energy
  • Employee Common Sense makes all the difference in
    energy savings.
  • What employees and management know about energy
saving, helps them to spot energy waste.
  • Rewards and incentives remind employees to save
    energy.
  • Energy saving practices often save work-hours.

8
Electricity use accounts for 60 to 70 of
utility costs
  • HEATING VENTILATION AND AIR CONDITIONING
  • GENERAL OPERATIONS

9
Lighting is about 30 to 40 of organization
Electricity Costs.
  • Light energy saving rate of 50 or more is
    possible, when workplace is occupied.
  • Energy efficient compact fluorescents use a third
of the watts, making the electric bill smaller
    for the same lighting.

10
Lighting is about 30 to 40 of organization
Electricity Costs.
  • Inefficient bulbs create serious heat that can
    run up air conditioning costs.
  • CLEANING fixtures once a year can save as much as
    30 in room lighting.
  • Is outdoor lighting being used well and inspected
    regularly?

11
The Easy Lighting Cost Savers
  • CHOOSE LOWER LAMP WATTAGE. Todays bulbs are
    brighter but use less wattage.
  • TURN OFF UN-NEEDED LIGHTS.
  • USE TASK LIGHTING. It puts light where it is
    needed, saving wasted overhead lighting.
  • INSTALL TIMERS AND MOTION SENSORS. Controls can
SAVE 10 or more of lighting costs.

12
Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
  • HVAC systems have coils that need cleaning and/or
filters that need changing. Dirty coils and
filters cut efficiency and could create many
thousands of rupees in extra costs.
  • HVAC Fan motors and drive belts need maintenance.
A worn belt can mean 10 extra motor operating
    costs.
  • Use Zone and Automatic Controls.

13
Food Court Kitchen Equipments
  • Properly use and maintain equipment.
  • Periodically clean refrigeration condenser coils
    can save thousands.
  • Is there over refrigeration or freezing?
  • Can the kitchen exhaust be better balanced?
  • Use energy saving appliances.

14
General Operations in Energy
  • Are office machines energy efficient?
  • Are hot water heaters maintained?
  • Are boiler tubes cleaned every few years?
  • Are water body pumps and filters cleaned?

15
Energy Bills can LIE
  • Problems with meters could go undetected for
    years.
  • Compare electric bills with the same periods in
previous years to detect costly hidden problems
    or practices.
  • Rate Schedules can be adjusted once a year to get
the best rates, as equipment, practices, and
    circumstances change.
  • Rate Schedule fees and penalties can show
something is wrong with your operation.

16
NOW COMES TO WATER
  • Ensure that drips from taps or showers are
    stopped.
  • A dripping tap or shower can waste 1,200 litres
of water a year at one drip per second. If the
drips are breaking into a stream, that water
wastage could be as much as 32,000 litres per
    year.
