Tourism Recreation Research and Education Centre
funded by the Ministry of Economic Development
and the Canterbury Development Corporation which
was released in March 2004 includes the following
statistics for the 2003 year Person
Nights Commercial Accommodation 342,000 Holiday
Home 56,300 Total Bed Nights 398,300 Day
Trip Visitors 802,900 What does this
translate into as revenue? Our research indicates
that tourism alone generates at least 67,000,000
income for Kaikoura, per annum, calculated as
follows- Whale Watching and other marine based
tourism activities 15,000,000 Expenditure
accommodation (Excluding meals) 398,000 bed
nights estimated at 60 per bed
night 24,000,000 Food, entertainment, retail
etc for overnight visitors Estimated _at_ 40 per
person 16,000,000 Spending by daytime
visitors (excluding marine activities) 802,900
