    base for this specialty

32
A New Concept
  • Discussions at the Societys Strategic Planning
Sessions have mentioned welcoming those from
other disciplines into our Society as full
    members (not associate)

33
Rationale for Examination
  • As WOCN is a leader in information, education and
policy pertaining to wound, ostomy and
continence, the WOCN Society Board of Directors
has a responsibility to continuously examine the
world in which our patients live and in which our
    members practice

34
Background
  • What are the facts?
  • 1. We are in the early stages of a significant
    nursing shortage
  • 2. The baby boomer population is approaching
the age at which they will become consumers of
healthcare services increasing the need for
    additional providers of care

35
Background
  • 3. The majority of our members are practicing
in the single-specialty of wound care and this is
contributing to an access-to-care issue for
    some of our consumers
  • 4. Other disciplines are already encroaching on
the peripheral areas of our practice
    specifically continence and ostomy care

36
So?
  • The Board believes that every WOC patient has the
right to care provided by a WOC specialty
clinician. There may not be enough clinicians
    for the increasing need
  • The Board has committed to thoroughly explore the
    concept of a multidisciplinary, tri-specialty
organization so that we can bring to the
membership a snapshot of the issues

37
So?
  • Hmmmmmto some
  • Ho Hum.to others

38
Whats Next?
  • Over the next few months, there will be surveys
designed and executed so that the Board can
continue to build an information base on this
    topic
  • The Society has contracted with a Healthcare
Market Survey firm for conduct of these surveys

39
And then?
  • When there is information to share, it will be
shared in a complete, organized way and designed
    for member input
  • This is not a done deal
  • Changes of this nature have been and will ALWAYS
    be membership decisions

40
