IV. Seasonal Discussion
  • This is the month that signals a major change in
weather patterns. The Polar Front is the
dominant force behind most of these
    meteorological changes.
  • From Shanghai eastward to the southern tip of
Kyushu, then northeastward parallel to the
southern Japan coast, the front acts as a buffer
zone between the cool northern air mass and the
warm southern air. As long as the cool air
persists over Japan, the tropical air is forced
aloft to form vast, deep layers of clouds from
    which falls persistent, light rain.
  • This is the Bai-U season which prevails over
Japan. Once established, it tends to persist,
producing a period of perpetual cloudiness,
continuous drizzle, and constant dampness. The
only relief from the monotony of the Bai-U is the
occasional passage of a cyclonic storm. If the
storm cell is large, a day or so of fair weather
may follow, but eh Bai-U is quick to reassert
    itself.
