1What is Leeds Student Medical Practice? A modern
friendly doctors practice located next to the
University of Leeds campus We are not a
University department, we are an independent
National Health
Service practice
2Who can register? Students (or married partner or
child of a student) AND who live in University
Accommodation in Leeds OR Private accommodation
in postal areas LS1 to LS7 or LS16 South of the
Ring Road AND Coming from a country with which
the UK holds a bilateral healthcare
agreement THIS ENTITLES YOU TO Register as a full
NHS patient. You do not pay for consultations
with our doctors or nurses, but do pay for
prescriptions, and optical and dental care
3Private patients If you are here less than 6
months from a country without a bilateral
healthcare agreement you can see a doctor or
nurse as a private patient, and pay a private
consultation fee You will also have to pay for
prescriptions, and optical and dental care
4- Whether you are an NHS or private patient
- There are no charges for
- Family planning services (contraception)
- Admission for mental health care
- Sexually transmitted disease treatment
- Maternity services
- Accident and emergency care
AE stands for Accident and Emergency, not
Anytime and Everything. Please use the service

6Access to doctors and nurses We offer a choice of
booked doctor and nurse appointments every week
- APPOINTMENT SURGERIESMonday to Friday 9am to
5.30pm - You can choose which doctor or nurse you see,
and can book several weeks in advance - You can make an appointment by calling in to the
surgery, or by telephoning on 0113 295 4488
(8.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday)
7and open access every weekday morning
- SIT AND WAIT SURGERIESMonday to Friday 9am to
10am - You must come into the surgery to put your name
down for the sit and wait surgery (we stop
taking names at 10am) - For short consultations only - so one problem
only please - Sit-and-wait surgery can bevery busy and you may
haveto wait 1 to 2 hours to be seen

9Confidentiality All personnel at Leeds Student
Medical Practice adhere strictly to a written
code of conduct for confidentiality Written
consent is obtained from students in all
circumstances before we enter into communication
with their departments, parents, or third parties
10Dental Care We dont provide any dental
facilities, but we do provide a list of dental
surgeries in the locality who are taking NHS
patients. This information is available on our
web sites Health Advice pages see Dentists in
this area Optical Care There is an opticians
practice based on the campus (Vision Opticians on
the ground floor in the Student Union building)
11Pharmacy First Most pharmacies in Leeds take part
in the Pharmacy First scheme whereby you can
consult with a pharmacist free of charge for
advice. The pharmacist will send you to your
doctor if they think it is necessary What can
you see the Pharmacist for? Coughs, colds, sore
throats, skin conditions, and upset stomachs
(and other similar conditions)
12Hospital Accident Emergency Departments Emergen
cy Departments (AE) are a 24 hour service for
people who have a serious and new injury or
illness. There are two located in Leeds at Leeds
General Infirmary, and at St Jamess
Hospital Please think carefully about using AE
it should not be used for minor problems as this
may lead to a considerable wait and may prevent
others with life-threatening conditions from
receiving emergency care NHS Direct (telephone
0845 4647) provides 24 hour expert advice on
health problems
13Meningitis C A National immunisation programme
means most students arrive at University
immunised against Meningitis C, and although we
have seen a reduction in cases of Meningitis over
the last few years, we strongly recommend all new
students receive vaccination against Meningitis
C, prior or on arrival in Leeds You can come to
the medical practice and receive this injection
free of charge
14Mumps We have seen an increase in outbreaks of
Mumps on Campus in the last 24 months Mumps is a
childhood illness which can be prevented by
vaccination with a combined Measles/Mumps/Rubella
injection It is a two dose vaccine, given one
month apart, you can come to the medical practice
and receive this injection free of charge
