Overview
  • Canning Vale College is a new school first
    opening in 2004.
  • The building program finished in July this year.
  • In 2007 we have our first Year 12 cohort.
  • EVERYTHING IS NEW we have no established
    traditions/routines/community relationships

Where to start?
  • Term 1 was dedicated to understanding the
    program.
  • SLT was approached to decide how to tackle the
    program.
  • We decided to adopt a service learning approach
    with each Learning Area taking responsibility for
    4 hours. CSP coordinator provides support where
    needed.
  • Additional activities planned by CSP coordinator.

Nuts and Bolts
  • 2 CSP coordinators sharing the role
  • 1 admin assistant since August
  • Activities publicised through Daily Notices and
    CSP noticeboard
  • Students register for activities on EOI sheets
  • Some activities run through normal classes
  • Logbooks stored with Advocate teachers students
    sign them in and out.

Facts and Figures
  • 256 Year 10 students
  • 34 students have completed 20 hours
  • 105 students have logged SOME hours
  • 151 students have logged NO hours
  • 1097 of a total of 5120 hours have been completed
  • 20 students involved in Option 1 activities.

Successes

    activity.

  • Commitment from already stressed staff.
  • Student reluctance to get involved.
  • Parents apparent lack of interest in the
    program.
  • The paper trail and administration.

  • Time share arrangement for coordinators

Where to from here?
  • Letters have been sent to local organisations
    requesting their involvement.
  • Continuing publicity within school and wider
    community through staff meetings, newsletters,
    local newspaper.
  • Promotion of the program to current Year 9
    students.
  • Ongoing support of staff planning to organise CSP
    activities as a part of their learning program.
