  • Lesson 1.3- Light Shadows

Graphic Overview
Suns Light
Lunar/Solar Eclipses
Earth Moon Move
Phases of the Moon
Day/night of Earth
3
Catching the Rays
  • Sunlight travels in rays that move away from the
    sun
  • the suns rays do not light up space only the
solid objects they hit, which is why half of the
    Earth is always dark

4
Moonlight Reflections on Sections
  • The moon is shaped like a ball but every night
    seems to change shape
  • these changes are called phases of the moon and
repeat a pattern every 29 1/3 days (one full
    orbit of Earth)
  • The shape of the moon we see depends on how
much of the sunlit side of the moon faces Earth.

5
Making A Shadow
  • A solar eclipse takes place when the moon moves
directly between the sun and Earth so that all
three are lined up in a straight line
  • during a solar eclipse, the moon blocks sunlight
from reaching Earth, making a shadow of the moon
    on Earth

6
Making A Shadow continued...
  • Sometimes the Earth passes between the moon and
the sun that is called a lunar eclipse
  • a lunar eclipse casts a shadow on the moon

7
Gravity Orbits
  • When two objects attract each other, the object
with less mass will move more easily, which is
why the moon orbits the Earth
