Title: Generating Syllabus Learning Outcomes

1
Generating Syllabus Learning Outcomes
  • Tom Dolan, Political Science Zo Webster,
    Physics on behalf of POSSE

Promoters of Outstanding Student-centered,
Standards-based Education
2
Why Learning Outcomes?
  • Because SACS said so

3
No, really. Why?
  • It provides the student and instructor with an
    idea of the goal.
  • Learning outcomes
  • A description of what the student will learn in
    your class
  • Essential knowledge and skills student must have
    to pass the class

4
What makes a useful statement?
  • Describes the student learning clearly
  • Learning, not activity
  • Difference between participate in and be able
    to
  • Is measurable
  • Student centered
  • Non-trivial

5
An example
  • Todays Learning Outcome is
  • I will share what I know about creating outcomes
    with you.

6
Example (cont)
  • Todays Learning Outcome is
  • Participants will understand what learning
    outcomes are.

7
Example (cont 2)
  • Todays Learning Outcome is
  • Participants will generate performance based and
assessable outcomes for a course they teach and
will create an assessment plan to enhance the
    student achievement of that outcome.

8
Assessment - the flip side
  • Once you say what is important, you should make
sure it is evaluated at some point during the
    term.
  • Dont forget to share the expected outcomes with
the students - share with them where they should
    end up!

9
Inspired by
  • Huba, Mary Freed, Jann (1999) Learner Centered
Assessment on College Campuses Shifting the
Focus from Teaching to Learning, Allyn Bacon.
  • And other readings from Faculty Academy for
    Learning Through Performance Standards and
    Assessment Workshops.
