IntroductionBiogenetically modified foods have
been a serious issue lately as the world
population keeps increasing. The natural
resources to produce the foods are not able to
satisfy the people needs. According to that,
foods companies start obtaining new methods to
generate substantial amount of foods, neglecting
the adverse consequences of their products
quality. Their crops results a lot of health and
environmental issues, as the chemical substances
that their crops containing may damage the
consumers health in a long term. As well those
chemical materials accumulate in the natural
environment causing a serious harm

Background
  • In 1964 the rice research institute in
Philippines managed to breed new strains of rice
    that doubles the yields
  • In 1972 another revolution was underway. Research
team at Stanford University discovered how to
join together DNA from two different organisms,
creating the first recombinant DNA molecule
  • In 1981, Monsanto, a company previously known for
producing herbicides in farming, set up its own
    biotechnology division.
  • In 1994, the first commercially available GM food
appeared on the market. The tomato was
genetically engineered to keep it firm for
longer. It was a big hit with consumers.

5
Public Thoughts
  • An overwhelming majority thinks GM foods should
    be labeled as such. A
  • strong majority would be willing to pay more to
    ensure labeling, and an
  • overwhelming majority would like to have access
    to detailed information
  • about such products. A strong majority also
    regards it as legitimate for
  • Europe and Japan to require labeling of
    genetically modified products,
  • even if this might discourage consumers from
    buying US products. Even
  • though the FDA is highly trusted, a strong
    majority believes current
  • regulations are not adequate to protect people

6
Public SurveyRecent surveys that was
implemented by two news channels and Harris
interactive poll on the plotted bars below shows
7
The Harm Of GMFs
  • An experiment carried out in
  • Scotland, where rats fed for ten
  • days on transgenic potatoes
  • containing a lectin gene from
  • snowdrops appeared to develop
  • internal organ damage

8
Possible Recommendations
  • Recommendation 1
  • Voluntary labeling
  • Recommendation 2
  • Informing the general public
  • Final recommendation
  • Labeling the GMF's

9
Voluntary labeling
  • It ensures rapid transition to the environment
and where the consumers can exercise their
    freedom of choices

10
Informing the general public
  • The FDA (U.S Food and Drug Administration) has to
regulate the promotion of (GMFs) development and
    inform the public about it.

11
Labeling the GMF's
  • All foods whether pre-packaged or not should be
    subjected to extensive labeling requirements
    under FDA legislation

12
ConclusionSince the majority of people are
willing to pay more to ensure the labeling for
the GMFs, this request has to be implemented.
The producers will compensate the cost of the
expenditure for this implementation by
increasing the price of their products.
