  • States of Matter

2
States of Matter
  • A State of Matter means a group of matter with
    the same properties.
  • Dont forget, a property is a way to describe
    some sort of matter.

3
States of Matter Menu Page
  • There are four basic states of matter.
  • ( Click to explore each one)
  • Solid
  • Liquid
  • Gas
  • Plasma

Solids
  • The first state of matter that well talk about
    are Solids.
  • A Solid is anything that has a definite size and
    shape.
  • You can change the shape of solids by cutting or
    breaking them.
  • Click here for more information about Solids

Liquids
  • A Liquid is something that has size or volume (it
takes up space), but does not have a definite
    shape.
  • Liquids take the shape of their containers, or
the surface on to which they are poured.
  • Liquids can be poured, flow, and be spilled.

Gas
  • A Gas is a State of Matter that has no shape or
    size of its own.
  • Gases have no color.
  • Gases are all around you, although the air is
many types of gases mixed together.
  • Click here to find out how even though you cant
see it, you can prove that air is there.

Plasma
  • Plasma is matter that has lost all of its
electrons and has become ionized through very
high temperatures, such as a star.
  • Plasma is a cloud of protons, neutrons and
electrons where all the electrons have come loose
from their respective molecules and atoms
  • This gives plasma the ability to act as a whole
rather than as a bunch of atoms.

13
Plasma
  • Plasma is the most common state of matter in the
    universe
  • Plasma makes up more than 99 of our visible
universe and most of that not visible.
  • Plasma occurs naturally and is what makes up our
    sun and the stars.
  • Here on Earth, Plasma is what makes up flames,
    lightning, and the auroras.

Heat
  • Heat affects the way that matter acts by exciting
    its molecules.
  • This molecule motion causes solids to burn or
melt, liquids to boil and become gas, or gas to
become (at incredibly hot temperatures, like at a
    stars center) plasma.
  • Click here to see a video on how heat affects
    matter!

Cold
  • Cold can affect the State of Matter of a
    substance.
  • Cold causes the motion of molecules to slow down
and change the State of Matter
  • Cold, when applied to a freezing temperature,
will make solids especially rigid and fragile,
liquids freeze into ice, and gases to crystallize
    into moisture droplets.
  • Plasma tends to destabilize when extreme freezing
    occurs.
