Lesson 2
Essentials
  • SAFETY
  • ONE step at a time!
  • TIMING
  • Rate of Reinforcement

3
3 Types of Consequences
  • Consequences which give Rewards increase a
    behavior.
  • Consequences which give Punishments decrease a
behavior. (Remember, though NEVER PUNISH A FEAR
    BASED BEHAVIOR! This means horses!)
  • Consequences which give neither Rewards nor
    Punishments extinguish a behavior.

4
Reinforcement FUNCTIONAL Theory
  • All components are defined by their FUNCTION
  • How they WORK
  • Not how they look.

Remember Consequences influence behaviors.
Rewarding consequences INCREASE behaviors NO
CONSEQUENCES EXTINGUISH a behavior.
5
Start Small
  • IF Horse is being aggressive about the treats and
respecting your space start out in a stall
  • Put the horse in the stall with a dutch door or
    use a stall guard.
  • Teach the horse to target the cone or target
stick while the horse is in the stall
  • Teach the back up ask horse to step back X
    number of steps as requested

Variation to teach good manners at feed time
AND to establish good clicker associations, ask
horse to step back 3 or 5 steps and ask to WAIT
while you put grain down. Do not allow horse to
go to grain until he stands STILL. CLICK/TREAT
(allow to go to grain bucket).
