I. Regions Grow Further Apart
  • The main question in the mid 1880s was Should
    the new territory in the West be slave or free
    states?
  • Missouri Compromise of 1812 kept the number of
    slave states and free states equal.
  • Anti slavery democrat David Wilmot introduced the
    Wilmot Proviso. This outlawed slavery in all
    territory acquired from Mexico.
  • Sectionalism-people are more loyal to their state
    or region than they are to their country as a
    whole.
  • Popular sovereignty- The notion that people
    should have the right to rule themselves.

    tried to play down the any discussion on slavery.
