I. Regions Grow Further Apart

• The main question in the mid 1880s was Should
  the new territory in the West be slave or free
  states?
• Missouri Compromise of 1812 kept the number of
  slave states and free states equal.
• Anti slavery democrat David Wilmot introduced the
  Wilmot Proviso. This outlawed slavery in all
  territory acquired from Mexico.
• Sectionalism-people are more loyal to their state
  or region than they are to their country as a
  whole.
• Popular sovereignty- The notion that people
  should have the right to rule themselves.

The Election of 1848

• In the election of 1848 Northerners Southerners
  tried to play down the any discussion on slavery.
• The conscience wigs rebelled against the
  northern wigs their leader Zachary Tyler they
  formed the free- soil party.
• The free soil party elected Martin Van Buren as
  their candidate.
• Although Taylor won the free soil party received
  a impressive amount of votes.
• Slavery hurt both major parties.
