Who is al-Jaafari?
  • Born 1947 in Karbala, a Shia
  • Graduated at Mosul University as a physician in
    1974
  • Joined the Islamic Daawa Party (main resistance
    party to Saddams regime) in 1968
  • Moved to Iran in 1980, where he became involved
    in anti-Saddam movement
  • Moved to London in 1989, where he became the
    spokesman for the Daawa party in the UK

  • Returned in Iraq after the 2003 invasion
  • Picked in July 2003 as member of the US-backed
    Iraq Interim Government Council
  • Served as the first chairman and first interim
    president for one month
  • 1 June 2004, selected one of the two
    vice-presidents in the new Iraqi government
  • As of February 12, 2006, Jaafari was named the
    new Iraqi Prime Minister (as a member of the
    United Iraqi Alliance)
  • The United Iraqi Alliance is a broad-based
    coalition of over 20 groups, but it is dominated
    by the two major Shia parties, Prime Minister
    Ibrahim Jaafari's Islamic Daawa Party, and Abd
    al-Aziz Hakim's Supreme Council for the Islamic
    Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI).
  • The UIA won 128 out of 275 seats in Iraq's new
    parliament, the Council of Representatives, in
    the 15 December 2005 elections, 10 seats short of
    a majority.

    autonomy

  • Failure of the new government to work together
    with all ethnic groups, which will consequently
    lead to further polarization of the population

    people
  • Failure to prevent further violent clashes over
    the Mohammed cartoons
  • Failure to secure good relations with neighbors,
    which is important for the economic and political
    development of the country
