What can we all do to help?
  • Active surveillance counties can submit road
kill and odd behavior surveillance animal
    specimens
  • Everyone can report these animals to the LHD or
    animal control officers or USDA

HAVE YOUR PETS VACCINATED!!!

RABIES NEWS IN 2004
  • A teenager in Wisconsin has apparently recovered
from rabies. This is the first documented
recovery from clinical rabies by a patient who
had not received either pre- or post-exposure
prophylaxis for rabies. She had been bitten by a
    bat.
  • Several people died after receiving organ
    transplants in several south/southwestern states.
It was later found that donor had rabies

8
RABIES NEWS IN 2004
  • CDC has developed an internet-based mapping
application as a surveillance tool to help better
define the epizootic fronts of raccoon rabies in
    the eastern US
  • WV data is going into this data base monthly
  • Currently this application serves as a
surveillance tool. Future plans call for
expansion with inclusion of all states
    participating in rabies surveillance

ACTIVE SURVEILLANCE COUNTIES
  • Active surveillance seems to be dropping
  • During the first quarter of 2005, only 94
    surveillance animals were submitted
  • During the same period in 2004, 226 specimens
    were tested
  • How can we get MORE specimens?

10
ACTIVE SURVEILLANCE COUNTIES
  • Do you know that each of the active surveillance
counties can be paid for specimen and data
    collection and brain stem extractions?
  • Specimens are needed especially from the
counties along the western edge of the ORV
    barrier

What you can do to help
  • John Houben and Andy Moore from USDA are here to
talk to us about active surveillance
  • Be sure to include GIS data on ALL samples. It
is important to have accurate coordinates on
negative as well as positive specimens
  • We want to be able to plot both negative and
    positive data. BOTH ARE IMPORTANT.

  • If we can help, or answer questions, give us a
    call
