Overview of TRANS I
  • Target population Male-to-female transgender
    individuals, intensified outreach to
    African-American, Latina, and Asian Pacific
    Islanders
  • TRANS I Provided
  • A safe space for MTFs where they are welcomed and
    made to feel valued
  • A living room lounge area with TV/VCR, shower
    facilities, a resource closet, referral
    information
  • Individual health education sessions with one of
    a trained, multicultural team of health educators
  • 18 Health Education Workshops (in English in
    Spanish)
  • Linkage to Transgender Recovery Program (TRP)

Results of TRANS I
  • Over 3,000 MTFs received outreach services, 1,554
    MTFs utilized the project space, and 359 enrolled
    in prevention workshops.
  • Comparison of pre- and post-intervention data
    shows statistically significant decreases in
  • HIV risk behavior
  • Perception of barriers to substance abuse
    treatment
  • Depression

Barriers to Substance Abuse TreatmentScores were
on a scale of 1 (strongly disagree) to 5
(strongly agree), with higher scores indicating
higher levels of barriers to seeking substance
abuse treatment programs.

Overview of TRANS II
  • Trans II is targeting Gender Variant Individuals
    (GVIs) of color, including MTFs, FTMs, and other
    self-defined gender variant individuals.
  • TRANS II Provides
  • Outreach Expansion Program (OEP)-OEP will expand
    outreach to include GVIs in jail.
  • TRANS II workshops-TRANS II will continue to
    provide gender sensitive workshops for GVIs to
    reduce their drug use and HIV risk behaviors and
    increase their life skills.
  • Drug Treatment Readiness Enhancement Program
    (DTREP)-DTREP will provide pre-treatment support
    groups and case management to GVIs who are
    interested in enrolling in treatment.

TRANS II (Contd)
  • Transgender Treatment Enhancement Network
    (TTEN)-TTEN will promote collaboration among
    social service agencies offering substance abuse
    treatment resources to GVIs.
  • Transgender Sensitivity Enhancement Program
    (TSEP)-TSEP will provide transgender sensivity
    training to TTEN member agencies.
  • Transgender Resource and Neighborhood Space-TRANS
    II a safe space where GVIs are welcomed,
    including a living room/lounge area with
    television, showers, and a resource closet.
