- Dementia is the term used to describe the
symptoms of a large group of illnesses which
cause a progressive decline in a persons mental
functioning.

13The Dementia Epidemic - Prevalence
- New data indicate that in 2005, the number of
Australians with dementia will pass the 200,000
mark (and reach 1.0 of the population). - This compares with previous data projecting
around 182,000 Australians with dementia in 2005.
14The Dementia Epidemic - Incidence
- In 2005 we project there will be nearly 52,000
Australians newly diagnosed with dementia 1,000
per week. - This compares with earlier data which projected
around 18,200 new cases per year a nearly
3-fold increase.

- By 2050, there are projected to be over 175,000
new cases every year, more than the total number
of people with dementia in Australia in 2000.
