The Main Idea

• This book is about a 10 year old African-American
  boy, named Bud.
• His mama died when he was 6 years old and he was
  sent to an orphanage. He was at the orphanage for
  awhile but he decided he got sick of it and ran
  away.
• Then he met a young girl about his age named
  Deza. She helped him find the way to the rails.
• Later he finds his mamas father that he never
  met and its Herman E. Calloway. He told Lefty
  Lewis that Herman is his father.
• Herman is an owner of a band. Soon to find out
  Herman is Buds grandpa and Herman finds out his

• Bud got advice from Deza the he shouldnt carry
  around his moms picture until he finds that
  right place to put it.
• Bud probably learned that just because you are a
  mean and bossy man doesnt mean you have no
  feelings.
• Bud must have learned that some lies might be
  real.
• Bud got advice from Miss. Thomas that he must be
  patient.

Special Events

• Buds mama died when he was 6 years old and he
  had to move to an orphanage.
• Bud ran away and a driver found him in a bush at
  the local library.
• Bud told the driver that he lived in Grand Rapids
  and his father was Herman E. Calloway.
• The driver took Bud to Flint because the drivers
  friend Lefty Lewis was on his way to Grand
  Rapids anyway.
• Lefty Lewis and Bud went off to Grand Rapids
  and Bud soon caught u with Herman and to find out
  Herman is not his father, he is his grandfather.

The Setting

• This book takes place in Owosso, Michigan in a
  orphanage home. Later on in the story the main
  character travels to Flint, Michigan. Then soon
  later is taken to Grand Rapids, Michigan, a
  fancy, high class town. Main character (Bud)
  meets a rich old mean man who he thinks is his
  father but in reality it is his grandfather.

Meet The Characters

• Bud- The main character. He is a 10 year old
  African American boy who lives in an orphanage.
  He is very skinny and is a quiet intelligent
  smart boy.
• Herman E. Calloway- He is an elderly man who has
  his own band and Bud mistakes him for his father
  but its really his grandfather. He has dark
  hair, African American and he is a mean old man.
• Miss. Thomas- A nice lady who is Hermans
  assistant. She is an African American kind woman
  and loves to wear a lot of rings on her fingers.

• Kin I am only doing this because you are my kin.
  Meaning sibling, relative, family. Kin means
  related.
• Cold cocked Todd fell on the floor like hed
  been cold cocked. Cold cocked means struck with
  shock. Cold cocked means to be knocked
  unconscious.
• Shucks He said it like he already knew she was
  dead. Meaning darn or sorry about your luck.
  Shucks means being or marked by an
  unsophisticated, self-conscious, or self-effacing
  manner.
• Cop-a-squat He said to me cop-a-squat boy.
  Meaning sit down.

• The Great Depression was a physical and
  psychological impact on the entire nation.
• The Great Depression was a stock marketing
  problem, many people could not afford to pay it.
• People feared of losing jobs and unemployment
  cause anxiety, people became depressed and
  considered and attempted suicide.
• Thousands of people went hungry because of lack
  of food.
• Living conditions changed when multiple families
  crowded into small houses or apartments
