- Purpose
- Understand perceptions regarding the role of
hospital emergency department nurses - Methodology
- 2,000 adults 18 were screened for qualification
have been to a hospital emergency department in
the past 12 months - Ultimately 875 completed interviews
- CARAVAN telephone survey fielded August 5-8 and
August 11-14 - National probability sample of adults 18 ,
stratified by region - Significance testing conducted at the 95
confidence level
3Executive Summary
- Based on the results of this study, hospital
emergency department nurses enjoy a very
favorable reputation among American adults who
have been to a hospital emergency department in
the past 12 months. - This assessment is based on the following key
findings - Nine out of ten were satisfied with the services
provided by nurses during their last hospital
emergency department visit - 65 were very satisfied
- Four out of five or more believes that a hospital
emergency department nurse - is able to explain procedures (85)
- is good communicators (82)
- has good bedside manners (82)
- is responsive and attentive to their needs (81)
- shows genuine concern (80)
- is personable (79)
- has broad medical knowledge (79)
- Seven out of ten believe that nurses are the
unsung heroes in the hospital emergency
department they do the work. And they spend
the most time with patients.

- And, nurses and physicians are tied when it comes
to being the most important ally in the emergency
department - 45 rated nurses vs. 44 for physicians
