The Woman of Sickness

• A Gitxsan halayt used this carving to treat a
  patient during the influenza epidemic of 1918.
  The carver, Gamayam (Charles Mark), created the
  figure after his uncle, a halayt at Kispiox,
  asked him to carve an image representing medicine
  woman. The elders tell us the sick person was
  cured. Gitxsan community curators, 2004
• Made by Gamayam (only Mocking Raven) of
  Gitseguecla. Carved and painted wood, bear hide.
  Lent by the Canadian Museum of Civilization,
  Gatineau Quebec
