Ingrid and Jellyfish Examples
2
In one paragraph, describe how Ingrid is like a
jellyfish.
  • We swam in the hot aquamarine of the pool late at
night, in the clatter of palms and the twinkle of
the new-scoured sky. My mother floated on her
back, humming to herself. God, I love this. She
splashed gently with her fingers, letting her
body drift in a slow circle. Isnt it funny.
Im enjoying my hatred so much more than I ever
enjoyed love. Love is temperamental. Tiring. It
makes demands. Love uses you. Changes its mind.
Her eyes were closed. Beads of water decorated
her face, and her hair spread out from her head
like jellyfish tendrils. But hatred, now. Thats
something you can use. Sculpt. Wield. Its hard
or soft, however you need it. Love humiliates
you, but hatred cradles you. Its so soothing. I
    feel infinitely better now.

Example 1
  • Fitch describes Ingrids similarities to a
jellyfish to show how complex and dangerous
Ingrid is to herself and to others. Ingrid
drifts in a slow circle in the pool, her hair
spread out from her head like jellyfish
tendrils. Fitch compares Ingrid to a jellyfish
for two reasons. First, Ingrid appears to be
tranquil and relaxed, but her hair communicates
her thoughts, which seem harmless but have the
potential to sting anyone who gets in her way.
Second, Ingrids existence is similar to that of
a jellyfish. She is beautiful and seemingly
harmless to everyone around her. She floats from
place to place, but lashes out and stings anyone
    who tries to harm her.

Example 2
  • Ingrids deceptive beauty mirrors the graceful
but poisonous jellyfish. Her hair spreads out
from her head like jellyfish tendrils, and while
her beauty beckons suitors, her sting is much
more overpowering. Anyone who dares to get close
enough to touch Ingrid will be subject to her
painful and harsh actions. Ingrid is stunning,
but her ability to emotionally torture everyone
around her is similar to the way the luminescent
jellyfish stings its victimthe one who just
    couldnt stay away.

Example 3
  • Ingrids indulgent rumination, stagnant-but-deadly
anger, and physical movements, make her seem not
unlike a jellyfish. Ingrid floats in the pool
considering herself and basking in the soothing
cradle of her hatred. This is similar to a
jellyfish floating near the surface of the ocean,
basking in the hot sun. Jellyfish are dangerous
creatures that sting on touch. Although Ingrid
floats aimlessly like a Jellyfish, she too has a
sting prepared. Some jellyfish are as small as
marbles, and some as large as beds. Ingrids own
last name, Magnussen, means son of bigness in
Icelandic. This portrays Ingrid as large and
extreme, like the bed-sized jellyfish. Ingrid is
simply floating and reminiscing, her hair panning
out like jellyfish tendrils as she drifts in a
slow circle. This movement is just like the
movement of a jellyfish at sea, tired and
    aimless, simply floating by.

Example 4
  • In Fitchs White Oleander, Ingrid is likened to a
jellyfish by her deceptive manner and subtle
emotions. Ingrid is depicted as a gorgeous poet
and aloof woman, which disguises her vindictive
and cruel nature. She drifts along, much like a
jellyfish, and any swimmer who happens across her
path is aware only too late of her treacherous
sting. Ingrids anger writhes just beneath the
surface, hidden by beauty, just like the
jellyfishs billowing tentacles. She strikes as
suddenly as the jellyfish, without warning,
leaving her ill-prepared victim wounded or worse.
In this way, Ingrid and the jellyfish are one
entity beautiful, subtle, and ever-so deadly.
