Title: Cathryn

1
Cathryn
Cathryn is a post-16 learner and is a keen
environmentalist. She has been interested in
green issues since covering them at school in
year 6 and wants to make a difference when she
starts work. She also has artistic flair and
after attending an options evening at school is
attracted by the Advanced Diploma in construction
and the built environment it looks like it
could help her combine two of her favourite
subjects. In her spare time Cathryn helps her mum
with the local guide group and is busily helping
them raise money for a new hut. She has organised
a litter pick in her village and hopes it will
give the fund raising effort a real boost.

Work experience
Cathryn thought it would be great to try and
design a new guide and scout hut, incorporating
open spaces and an environmentally friendly
building. She drafted plans to include a small
plot of land for the guides and local people to
grow their own vegetables. Cathryn also designed
and costed a new hut that used mainly recycled
materials and ran on sustainable energy. As part
of this exercise Cathryn compared the cost of
conventional materials with those of recycled
alternatives, calculating the period of time it
would take for the building to effectively pay
for itself. She just needed 105,000 to turn it
into reality!
Cathryn spent her work placement with a local
housing association who were working on
renovating a stretch of canal that ran close to
her home. The work included plenty of digging and
weeding. Cathryn was allocated planning and
supervision duties too, being encouraged to
suggest what measures could be put in place to
protect wildlife during the work.
She also prepared an article for the village
newsletter outlining the benefits the new stretch
of canal would bring to the wider community.
After this experience Cathryn thought a career
in landscape architecture would suit her just
fine!

Progression route Cathryn applied to the local

administrator and was delighted to get the job.
She knew there would be plenty of work related
training ahead but was determined to use this

a landscape architect.
