    behavior
  • Can be used for children ages 2 to 12
  • Can be used by teachers and parents
  • Good for children with minimal behavior problems,
    as well as for children with more severe and/or
    oppositional behaviors

  • Very effective for STOPPING behaviors
  • Hitting, whining, teasing, arguing, pouting,
    yelling, tantrums, etc.
  • These behaviors are addressed easily and
    effectively with the counting strategies

  • Picking up, starting work, doing homework,
    getting up in the morning
  • Strategies used for these behaviors
  • Praise, Simple Request, Timers, Docking System,
    Natural Consequences, Charting, Variation of
  • 1-2-3 Counting
  • These strategies are often used by teachers with
    good classroom management techniques

  • Key component to the program
  • Thought is that too much talking leads to arguing
  • Use only one explanation, if absolutely necessary
  • Purpose of program is to train child, not to
    teach arguing

  • Very important to keep your emotions under
    control and start counting before you become
    emotional
  • If you discipline based on emotion, you have lost
  • Necessary to be consistent, decisive, and calm!

Kick Off Conference
  • Needs to occur PRIOR to beginning program
  • Teacher explains principle, method, result to
    children in class
  • Keep it short and simple

Counting Strategy
  • State Thats 1. Wait 5 seconds.
  • State Thats 2. Wait 5 seconds.
  • State Thats 3. Take 5.
  • For significant behavior (i.e., hitting), go
    straight to Thats 3. Take 5 and add another 5
    because it was serious.

Consequence or Time Out
  • Needs to be fair, reasonable, well defined, and
    just strong enough to do the job
  • Calm child and stop behavior
  • Should be 1 minute for every year of age
  • Does not start until child is calm

  • Time out in another class or quiet corner in
